Hard Drive read speed only 3.0 x on Nero?

Hi everybody, I've recently run into problems burning DVD-Rs with both Nero (6.0.0.0) and also CopytoDVD. I bought a new box of Datawrite Yellow Top 8x for my NEC3500, having previously used Datawrite Grey Top 8x and several other brands, with no problems. When I tried to burn some DVD backups with CopytoDVD, they all played the initial copyright warning (how ironic!) but then froze at the end of that bit of the DVD, and won't play any further. I tried to copy some MP3 files to several DVD-Rs using Nero, and the 'verify data' option, and they all failed. Then I used the 'test speed' option, and noticed that the read speed was only 2.9 to 3.0 x, and took 16 minutes to merely read the data from the hard drive, and again the burns failed, even at 2x speed.
Since the problem's occurring in both programs, I am assuming it's something odd with my hard drives. I have two 200Gb Maxtor IDE drives that are working at Ultra DMA Mode 6, but they both have a lot of files on (probably 300,000 or more, altogether). I've defragmented them, but still no luck. Has anybody here encountered a similar problem, or do you know if I can fix it?

I used the 'Test all drive speeds' option in Preferences, and that came up with the following:
C: 34,000KB/s
F: 58,000KB/s
G: 55,000KB/s (G: is the drive I use for the images)

first of all, your version is way to old, latest is 6.6.0.15 which is very new, but 6.6.0.14 has been out for a while so you should maybe go for that one..

Thanks for the reply Creaky, but I don't see how it could be caused by the version, as I've been using it with no problems for months, and the same problems occur on CopytoDVD.

i don't put much faith in the verify option myself. how about a logfile ? just to rule out the obvious. but 300,000 file - i think poor old Nero or any proggie would struggle a bit with that. I maintain backup (ie tape backups) infrastructure for my firm and i know what my Unix systems' hard drives/ and or backups think of gazillions of files - ie not a lot :)

Hi Creaky, how do I get the logfile? I've just successfully burnt a DVDR full of MP3 files, but with no mention of the logfile - does it only write one when the burn is unsuccessful?
I've had no problem with the 300,000 files before, so I don't think it's that, unless maybe they've reached a critical mass and that's why it's suddenly stopped working.

it's in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log - burns are appended to the log, and each section is sectioned via lines like this '====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======'. make sure to NOT post your serial number, which begins with '1A21' or similar, near to that header line

Creaky, thankyou for so much for going to such trouble with your long and detailed answer. I have just ordered 100 Taiyo Yuden DVD-Rs and 100 Taiyo Yuden CDRs, I'll also do all the updates you recommended, I think I flashed the firmware a few months ago, which is the only reason it came up as .07 (probably a pretty random choice on my part, I just needed to make the drive region free).
I'll let you know how I get on - I've read your other posts and I'm definitely going to avoid cheap media from now on- I don't want to find my discs unreadable in ten years' time! (Or even two years' time).
I've also just bought a new LG 4163B writer, as I needed a second one (my PC is accessible from two rooms in my house) - is it as good as the reviews say?

No worries, you're welcome. and you'll have read that i have an aversion to bad media :)
As to the firmware, i've made my suggestions from what i see in the log (ie if you had maybe put wrong firmware on before, that could catch us both out) - it's over to you to verify exactly what drive you have, and make the relevant choice of firmware from that.
As to the LG drive, i have no idea what it's like as don't tend to read reviews on too much stuff these days i don't get to buy much kit anymore, so don't keep up with all the latest hardwware as much as i did in the past. About the only time i see new kit is in logfiles such as yours lol :)

Hi Creaky, I've had my Taiyo Yuden media for a day now, and burnt 25 DVD-Rs with absolutely no problems. I'm burning at 4x as these are for backups of some precious videos I have, and I'd rather wait longer and have reliable backups that last long enough for me to back them up to Blu Ray or whatever the next DVD media is going to be.
All that hassle because of CMC media!
