Original PS2 Won't Read Purple Discs Anymore

My PS2, which i'm not sure what the actual version of it is, except that i got it for Xmas the first year the PS2 was released, doesn't read purple games anymore - REAL STORE BOUGHT DISCS. (it won't read burned DVDS anymore either for that matter - any disc with a purple backing). I've heard of this being a problem, as my friend also has the same dilema. What caused this, and is there a way to get Sony to fix it (preferably for free, since it wasn't my fault)?

had a similar problem with my old ps2 which it couldnt read it I think cause the lens got dirtier. I would take it apart and clean the lens then it would work but I'm pretty sure they are harder for the lens to read then clear normal disks so if you can take it apart and try cleaning it with isopropyl alcohol and a cottonswab it should work.

the purple backed discs that are store bought are CD's
do you get an error message that says "disk read error"?
your laser probably just needs cleaning and if that doesn't work google "disk read error" and you'll come up with a lot of sites with tutorials to help
