yeh i agree at the moment the 939 socket is the best for future proof but no doubt by xmas the boffins at amd will have come up with something superior :o)worth checking if the mobo is dual core ready too. the forums on www.overclockers.co.uk are quite sorted on this subject, takes a bit of digging about but lots of nice info in there :oP~
i would avoid the msi motherboards if you want to oc directly from the bios as for some reason they have problems posting after a mild overclock and then you need to use clockgen in windows to knock it up further, this may be sorted in a later bios update though. but yeh go for a 3200 venice is the best bet at the mo, just for the x 10 multiplier over the x9 on the 3000 venice.

HELP
Ok, so I was fidling with my pc earlier, clocking the graphics card in windows and I put the speeds up high...ok, that was fine, or seemed to be at the time. I have since restarted my pc and now it wont boot beyond the bios counting screen...I have full image of all this, and I can't even get into bios to change any settings. I tried reverting the bios to an older version via the clearcmos jumper but that doesnt seemt to have had any effect.
Does any one have a clue what I have done? As far as I can see the GPU clocking isn't what is causing this, it just happens to have happend when I did it.
:'(
All I have is a black screen with that little command promt cursor thing flashing, and no I can't tpye anyting.
HEEEEELLLPPP??!!!
(I'm just glad I have this laptop to help me out in times of need)

Well it shouldn't be too big a problem, I have most of the info backed up on dvd. It was my spare data drive, I'm just glad really that it was that one, and not one of my main HDDs. I have 3. 1 which is split into 2, has windows on one segment and some data on the other, and another which is a 200gb drive will all my programs and recent data on it. and then my 3rd drive which was my drive that held all of my video footage, well some of it. 60gb aint much space for video, only a few hours.

OK That is a good processor. My friend has one and he has no problems with it, so I recommend it. Now about the motherboard, I need some info: Are you planning on usin SLI; Are you going to use a PCIe GFX Card or AGP? As you're not planning on Overclocking(or have you changed your mind) I would recommend maybe an Asus, or MSI mobo.

Well if you're planning on using AGP, theres no way you can use SLI. They are two different interfaces. So first what kind of video card are you planning to get? AGP or PCI Express?

If he wants to splash a little extra cash he can get an AGP + PCIE board covering for whichever card he wants to get, also meaning that when Nvidia have killed AGP then he still has PCIE to rely on when he gets a new card. If you don't belive me about dual ones, look at this site www.overclockers.co.uk they sell them.

Wow I wish I hab known those existed...I was looking for one a while ago but now it's too late. I think it may be a good idea for him to get a combo board only if he already has an high quality AGP card, otherwise its pointless...

Well the setup he is currently running is below low :P It is a fair few years old 733mhz CPU (or something small like that). So I think it doesn't hugely matter what one he runs realy :P

Anyone got any ideasas how to overclock in Sli mode? I've got 2 7800's and I could overclock it when I had one to 498 mhz but now I can't change it past the default speed of 430. Even if I move it to 431mhs and press the test button it keeps saying that the frequency test failed, lower the frequency and try again? I've also tried using Rivatuner with the same results. I'm using 77.76 drivers if that helps.

Well, first ill get the mobo and CPU then ill look into getting another video card. What AGP + PCIE board would go with the CPU you said? ASUS is in there now and havent had any troubles with it, but what would be best is what i will get :)

Ok at overclockers Australia one guy said:
since you only have $500, sell that gear first.
Assuming you get $150 out of it, that leaves you $650.
From that you can get something like this:
Gigabyte K8NS pro - $110
Sempron 3000+ 754 - $115
6600gt agp msi 128mb - $235
120gb HDD Seagate - $109
That totals $560, giving you $90 for a case and pwoer supply.
i dont think ive missed anything above.
btw, prices are from MSY, http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf
edit: damn i forgot memory. you can get 512mb generic from MSY for $65.

ok i think the basic components for a future proof pc may be a little over your current budget, to be realy future proof you need to make sure your system will accept future processor revisions/ graphics cards.
your safest bet would be to try and summon up say $800
from which you should be able to get:-
socket 939 board - pci-e
amd 64 3200
nvidia 6600gt
1 gig pc 3200
atx 2.0 psu
as you are not actualy going to overclock have a look at foxconn motherboards, all the reviews i have read have been very favourable, and they are suited to a lower budget systems.
having looked at the link that alien 13 posted http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf
looking through i found the leadtek nf4k8mc-rs @ $99
amd athlon 64 3200 @ $259
1 gig of kingston ddr 400 @ $160
which totals your total budget, but with the sale of your old pc and a little saving you could get the :-
128 x'v' 6600gt @ 225
which just means finding the atx 2.0 psu @ 70 - 100
so i do feel that you need to save at least another $200 with the sale of your old comp, to make something that will handle future advances in tech.
as i dont personaly know about the reputation of australian retailers i would always try and by a brand which covers you with a warranty as well as anything the shop offers. that way if in the worst case senario you have another way for getting your parts replaced. remember if your not planning of overclocking you wont be voiding your warranties
oops i just realised you will need a case too if you sell your old comp lol and cdrom/dvdr/harddrives ect so i recon try to get to about $900 savings and sell your old pc and you should be able to get a reasonably future proof gamer
