Nope, you need the actual Swap Magic disks or a modchip. The PS2 looks for intentional bad sectors on the boot disk (swap magic, or original PS2 disk) in order to load the game. Copying Swap Magic to another disk will not transfer these bad sectors it needs to load.

can swap magic disks be picked up in a computer store or must they be ordered online from their website?

Well, you're more than likely to find one at a game store. EB Games or Gamestop will NOT carry them, but some smaller gameshops like Starland carry them. They're pretty hard to find retail, but if you look around your area for some hole in the wall game store, you may find it there. Most retail places dont like carrying them, because it's basically asking people to pirate games. I know Starland carries them, you can try to look at http://www.estarland.com to see if there's a store anywhere near you.

alright thanks for your help i wasted 3 blank dvd's so far, they will make great coasters. Isn't there some software that creates bad sectors so regular dvd disks will boot?

No, the bad sectors are fixed by your DVD Writer, not software... there's no way around it.

Also, if you've burned 3 DVDs, but dont have Swap Magic or a modchip yet, they're not necessarily coasters yet. Wait until you get the precedure down correctly before you deem them worthless =). Dont go setting your beer down on it just yet.

how are they not worthless? They can't be used by my ps2 and they've been burned already. They seem fairly useless to me (other than ninja using them as ninja shurikens).

Well, if you burned 3 games and everything went correctly with the burn, then all you need is a way to boot them. That's where the Swap Magic or modchip come into play. You boot up with Swap Magic and then load the game when it tells you to, voila.... no coaster.

BTW.. Forget what I said about finding a Starland near you. I didn't realize they're only in the Washington DC area.

okay so first you insert the swap magic disk. Then it boots and then asks you to insert a game? Or do you burn the game onto the swap magic disk?

Okay, Swap magic is a Disk, which you have to buy off Swap Magic or one of there retailers. The disk is the software used to boot up backed up games. Try to think of it as hardware, because you cannot copy the Swap magic cd, it is burned with by some technique which will not alow it to be copied, if you saw the dvd you'd understand what i mean, the underside looks very wierd.

Anyway, you first boot up your ps2 with swap magic untill it gets to the loading screen and then stops. At this stage the dvd stops spinning and has loaded itself into the ps2's short term memory. Now you use the slide tool to unlock the Drive, you cannot simply eject the disk other wise the ps2 things its changing disk and deletes the short term memory for the new boot and you loose everything. Okay, so now when you open the drive using the tool and method discribe on the Swap magic site, you then put in your Backup game dvd, and use the same method in reverse to lock the tray once again.

All this time the swap magic is still present on the screen, once the backup is in the drive you press x and it boot the backed up game.

Simple...
