I am hearing a crackling noise comming out of my PS2. I am sure it's something to do with the CD drive, and was wondering if there is any way to alleviate this problem. Does this later lead to DRE?

Help would be much appreciate.

When does the sound actually appear ? While you're playing games or when u eject the tray ? Coz if its when you eject the tray, then its the little plastic thing that controls laser movements going bald.

It happenes in MGS 3, and it only happens when I'm talking on the codec. Also, I checked, and my disk (RENTAL) is verry scratched in a certain place. so I was thinking it might be that. I just want to make sure.

Well, if the sound occurs while you're playing the game, most likely its the sound of the laser trying really hard to read the disc. Because its scratched, the laser keeps trying to read it, hence the crackling sound. So all is good.. :)

I had the smae problem but the real problem is your memory card you hear the noise beacause the ps2 cant read your card so all you have to do is sick a large piece of paper between the controller and memorycard that worked for me it might sound dumb but it wrks ;)
