Hello everybody. Congratulations for the efforts you are doing in order to solve the interesting problems concerning the backup of our PS2 games. I ?ve been following the forums for a long time but this is the first time I write. The reason I decided to write is because I want to share my experiences with you. Moreover, I would like to discuss a problem I have with you. You might help me.
First of all I would like to make clear that when I refer to perfect backup I mean that I have made a copy of an original game I own, and I have played the game from the beginning to the end ? using the backup ? without a single problem.

My machines and software are the following:
- PIII 866 Mhz
- DVD recorder: NEC 3520
- PS2 fat Messiah modchip (bought in May 2004 so it is a v9 or 10 or greater) It doesn?t really matter I think
- PS2 slim messiah modchip ? just bought
- DVD Decrypter
- Alcohol 120
- Nero 6
- Gamejack 5
- I always use quality blank DVDs ? TDK, VERBATIM(MCC, YUDEN) etc
Successful backups:
- Time Splitters Future Perfect
- Metal Gear Solid 2
- Metal Gear Solid 3
- Prince of Persia Sands of time
- Prince of Persia Warrior within
- Need for speed Underground 2
- Syphon Filter The Omega Strain
- Silent Hill 4
- Splinter Cell Pandora Tommorow
- GTA San Andreas
etc..

I don?t mention any more backups. These backups are enough to show you that my PS2 can play backups and that my NEC 3520 can make good backups.
And now to my problem. I tried to backup my Burnout 3 and I had the following problems.
First I used DVD DECRYPTER to read and burn the iso at 2x speed. Coaster. The game froze at a specific point during the game. And now the strange thing. I used THE SAME ISO to make a new copy. Coaster. But now it froze at a completely different point during the game. After that I experimented a lot. I made a lot of copies using different settings, different speeds, different DVD brands, different software and of course a new ISO each time. All coasters. The strange thing is that each of the 15 or more coasters freeze at different points!!!!!.
I can play the game using the backups since when a copy freezes I reset the PS2 using another copy and I can continue playing. So using 2 copies is enough for me to finish the game. When the first copy freezes at some stage I play this stage using the second copy. I can play the game but I made all these failed attempts because I want to understand what is the problem. I don?t think the original is damaged because of a scratch or something because the same iso gives two backups that freeze at different point. If the original was scratched or something all the copies would freeze at the same point, right? It cant be my burner. Nec 3520 is a decent burner if not one of the best, and I have made difficult backups using it such as GTA San Andreas. The reason for all these is that I am curious to find a solution for this problem. The only explanation I can think of is that the same game can be copied in my computer but not in someone else?s because of the different configurations. I am telling this because I have read in the forums that a lot of people have made perfect backups of Burnout 3.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Use a different copy of burnout 3, It sound like yours is that I've hear of call not balanced right and when it's in your cpu its haveing trouble reading the disk thats why it freezes at different points, This is also know as a bad press, I'm sure If you Use a different copy of the game you'll have no problems,If you have to just rent the game and burn it witch is ok because you own the original game.

Sometimes you can get very lucky with cheap dvds, like a shop near me called Tescos and they sell 25 disks for £10 and i could swear that it's the same die they use in Verbatim disk's, guess i got lucky :)

I use PRO-DATA DVD-Rs manufatured by ANS32 or sumthing like that. Each disc is $1+Tax and they work perfectly...loading imes are very fast, actually extremely fast. But i personally think 1 disc for 1$+tax is too much.

Sony PS2 (Playstation 2) Slimline (V12) GH-035-71
Sony Playstion 2 Region: NTSC (North America - USA and Canada)
DVD-/+R: Verbatim DVD-/+R 1x-8x 4.7GB MCC and PRO-DATA DVD-R 4x 4.7GB
DMS4 Lite Modchip + ToxicBIOS Ver. 1.3 + Possible Fix
Dual Shock Controller
Dual Shock 2 Controller
8MD Memory Card

Burner: Sony DVD RW DW-D26A
Software: DVDDecrypter, Nero, and Alcohol 120%

So Decon954, you are saying that some original games might be pressed in a bad way, and this causes me a problem.
Very interesting!!! Is this a fact or a personal point of view?
Any way to backup these bad pressed DVDs ? (instead of using another original backup of Burnout 3)

Any other explainations? Anyone else with the same problem ? Whar did you do?

By the way my TDKs are not CMC. They are TTH02

Thank you in advance

tomatoegg, this is fact and it is more common in dvd movies then ps2 games, some people have a hard time backing up the same game\movie that someone else did with no problem, thats why alot of people post that they had no problem backing this or that up.It just lets people know that it maybe something wrong with the disc, and I'm sure that if you have done back ups before and you know what your doing than, If you go and try a different copy you'll have no problem, 2nd if I am right and it is your disc then there is no way you can use it to make a backup and if you did I'm sure it would skip or have bad cut seens and bad audio. good luck

do something quick and easy.you have a slim so you could open up the tray and gently wipe the lens with a cotton swab that has been dipped in rubbing alcohol(with the excess squeezed out).then gently dry the lens with the other end of the swab.

a slim ps2 opens up the tray with a lid.so the lens is exposed to the elements more so than older ps2.so chances are greater for dust and dirt buildup.and it wont kill you to clean your ps2 lens even if it doesnt solve your problem.

Thank you Decon954. I really appreciate you answer. I learnt something new.
Finally I would like to inform you that I have made a lot of backups using TDK (TTH01) and I had no problems so far. They load properly and I have no skipping problems. I personally suggest them. But just for experimentaton I will buy a cake of Verbatims next time.
Thanx again.

Any other suggestions fully accepted.

I have to agree with the bad Press thing... I recently tried to copy Juiced and it copied fine... but when I tried to play it; it would freeze right after Swap Magic ended (The Blue line at the top came up and the screen went black... but froze there)... but I read all these other people had no problem copying Juiced... so my Juiced must have been pressed wrong or bad...

And about the DVD thing... I personally recommend DVD+R of a quality brand... Verbatim and Philips are good brands of my personal experience...

V3.10 60gb PS3
V5.50 GEN D-2 Limited Edition Crisis Core PSP
V7 Clear Blue PS2 w/Fliptop
Swap Magic V3.6

I can't find Verbatim in the small town I live in so I use Maxell and avoid Memorex. I think Maxell is good quality media, I've never had any problems using it, and haven't heard any complaints about it.

hey luckgh0st,

I have tried verbatim, taiyo yuden, and nameless other brands for my ps2 games (with limited success), but I have found that Maxell never lets me down. I only use Maxell blank discs now for my all my ps2 burning.

Good...Bad...I'm the guy with the gun.
