No audio when capturing VHS video

I am trying to convert a home movie from vhs to dvd using Nero 6. I have the vcr connected to the pc via composite and audio via 2 phono leads to the soundcard. Nero does not capture any sound on the recording. Clicking on the audio properties box it detects sigmatel audio as the audio device but doesnt detect any sound yet I can hear the audio from the speakers. thanks for reading
