I have a PS2 and Kingdom hearts. I made it as far as Alice in Wonderland's world when the dvd got a scratch on the painted side. . so that dvd is dead. BUT, if I downloaded a replacement and wanted to burn in to a dvd using Alcohol, could I just burn the image on a regular silver back DVD-r? Would i have to have special dvd's? Would my ps2 recognise it or does the ps2 have to be modded? I've read some threads that were helpful, but I'm unclear on a few points.
for example, many discussions mentioned decrypting the dvd first (I understand that this is when backing up a dvd that isn't damaged) but what if I have 2 dvd players. . . couldn't I just dvd copy from one drive to the other using Alcohol? Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the forum! You have many questions about DVD burning and you need to know what a DVD-R is. It's a single sided DVD5 (4.7GB) which means it will hold 4463kb of info on it! the normal movie DVDs are DVD9s which can hold as much as 8.7GB of info on the disk. So to make a backup copy you need to compress the size down to fit on a DVD5 (which is your DVD+-Rs) or you can put it on a DL (dual/double layer) DVD without compression which would make it a 1:1 copy! And you need to take out the encryptions that will prevent you from doing all this! Ok........ so for starters I suggest you get yourself some FREE programs and learn how to use it: DVDDecrypter, and DVDShrink! You can download it here:
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_...
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_...

with these two programs you can backup most DVDs with ease! here are some good guides to show you the way:

Now you are equipted with some powerful programs to do your backups with! You can use Alcohol but for a newbie you would be better off using these programs. Then as you get to know what is needed to do a backup you'll start to use other programs that will work for you! I don't think Alcohol will take out encryptions so you won't be able to copy your DVD! You can use other programs like DVD43 that takes out encryptions (runs in the background) and your favorite burning programs but you must compress them down to fit onto your DVD-+Rs! So if you become familar with the 2 programs I mentioned you'll have a better understanding of what is needed to do DVD backups. Then you can pick and choose what programs you want to use!

Now your damaged DVD. How do you know that DVDDecrypter won't extract the files from that DVD? I found that if you clean the DVD properly and try DVDDecrypter you might surprise yourself! I would try this first! See if you can get DVDDecrypter to work..... get the movie on your hard drive! Then take it from there using the guides and DVDShrink to compress and then copy to a disk! Good luck to you! and it's not this hard once you learn what to do! It's easy! check out my DVD collection:
