After about a year with this comp I've decided I would like it to be a little faster for video/picture editing. I've been looking around and have read that certain brands will not work with certain computers.

This is the computer I have:

This is the part that confuses me

So from what I understand I have a free socket. If so can I put a 1gb stick in there, or do I have to use another 512mb. Are there any pro's/con's do doing what I want? Would I be better off swapping for 2 1gb sticks?

I know there are alot of different specs needed to make a choice, without filling this up with alot of garbage if there's anything else you need to know I'll gladly tell. You guys have always been spot on, I've searched but I think this is one of those things that's not a generalized answer.

probably 2gig total in ram so depends on your wallet

I figured. Do you think I could get away with adding just another 512 stick, or if I went that route should I buy a 1gb (2x512) combo? Any recomendations, or better yet what should I look for "dual-channel,non-ecc...." and what should I avoid.

With RAM, it doesn't matter if you add a stick of a different size, but it is recommended (although not compulsary) that you choose a stick of the same speed as the existing memory. If you can't, don't worry, the faster RAM will throttle back to the speed of the slower stick.

The only thing you need to make sure of, if you have 2 slots (1 presumably filled) is to:

1. Only get 1 stick (duh)
2. get the same type of memory (DDR, preferably PC3200)

your maximum memory will be 1536MB, plenty for anything.
This however means getting a 1024MB PC3200 stick, which is reasonably costly.

I also had another question, if I add another stick do I have to change something to run "dual channel" or is that something different? I am under the asumption I can just "plug and play", meaning open the case-install-close case and boot it up. Am I missing something or is it really that easy?
