I've had a search about, but being new to this forum - hello! - and the whole PSP game I don't think I can find anyone who's had a similar problem.

I have a US PSP, running firmware v.1.52 (booo, no emulation for me - yet). As a test run, I'm using PSP Video 9 to convert little things like movie trailers (as I've still only got a 32 MB stick, the 512 is on it's way). Everything seems to be going fine. I'm converting a decent level of quality - 320x240 / 29.97fps / 768kbps Stereo / 128kbps - but when the video is transferred, I'm getting two problems.

1. Visuals are fine, aside from lots of tiny little squares flashing across the screen for the duration of the video.
2. Sound is a little 'crunchy' - certain levels of sound seem to make an eating cornflakes noise, especially noticable when people are shouting, for example.

Can anyone point me in the proper location for a bit of assistance?

FYI, games are working fine, with fantastic visuals and clear sound.

Thanks for any help!

It depends on the source quality of course. You said you encode movie trailers? Movie trailers are often crappy quality (especially those streamable, bitrate 300k or so). Try to use same fps as the original video has. Does the video have same particles and sound when played on computer?

Hi - many thanks for your assistance!

I've checked and the video pre-encoding is fine. No particles or sound problems experienced at all. Also, I've now tried to transfer an mp3 onto the system and it's also got a major problem - there's this huge buzz as the track plays, pretty much rendering it inaudible.

Any suggestions?

What the? So videos and mp3's are fine before you transfer them? Looks like the problem is with psp, but I can't see how it could be possible. Maybe your memorystick is fcuked up? Have you tried formatting it and then transfering?

Could you upload like a 5 sec clip that is messed up on your psp? I could try if it works on mine.

Hmmm... uploading is a bit tricky for me, I'm afraid I don't have any webspace! Could I possibly email it to somewhere?

I couldn't open it because my webmail doesn't work properly. But I saw that you sent me the original videofile. The solution is simple, you just have to find video with better quality. You can't improve image quality by encoding it to a different format. Even if you encode videos with good bitrate, the source video is still bad quality, and you will get a result that looks just the same as the original video. If get get for example the war of the worlds trailer (http://trailers.divx.com/Paramount/WarofTheWorlds.avi) and encode it, you can see the difference. You need divx 6 to watch/encode that video, get it from www.divx.com.

Right, I've taken the War of The Worlds trailer and encoded it again onto two different memory sticks, and the images and sound are the same on both - still distorted. I think I've got a duff machine, I'm afraid...
