I would like to copy my old movies that are on VHS but I keep getting a message that says copyrited or coded stream is there a way to over ride the copyrite so I can backup my old tapes

Yes.
You need a modified scart lead. I bought one from the net (do a search for kitvision) it was about £25.
Plug it in between VHS player and DVD recorder and it cuts out the Macrovision signal.
You may need to buy one of those multi-voltage transformer things from your local pound shop because the lead needs a 9v power supply. This is often provided by one of the output pins of your equipments scart socket but it my case it wasn't. If the little green light on the lead doesn't light up when all is connected you will need the power supply to plug into the female socket on the side of the scart lead plug. You may want to consider putting two tapes on one disc aswell considering how often you might watch old ones and the quality is already lost by virtue of the fact that your original is on VHS.

??? What brand DVD recorder do you have? My LiteOn? LVW-5005 can be 'fooled' into backing up protected tapes and discs simply by pausing the tape or disc at the beginning, starting the recorder and letting it record for about 15 seconds, then unpausing the tape or disc ??? Macrovision hacks are also available for most recorders ???

I like it.
Mine won't do that. its a Philips. It won't record if it does'nt recieve a signal so pausing would'nt work.

thanks for the advise I found on this site a link to a hack for my firmware update it turned off macrovision and turned on a few other features My dvd burner is a ILO DVDR4 it's a cheapo but it works just fine maybe someday I'll spend a lot of money for a dvd burner with all the bells and wistles then again maybe not thanks again for the advise and tips
