I would like to back up several PS2 games but read something about a modchip. What exactly is a modchip and is it absolutely essential for playing burned copies of PS2 games? why?

Modchips are the best way to play backup games. Swapping is also good, but not as good as modchips. Modchips are good because you dont have to open your cd tray or the flip to to place the backup in, with modchips you just place the backup in and play...works like a charm

I agree, a mod chip is the bet method, but not the only one.
If you tell us what version PS2 you have we can tell you what you need (old chunky or new slim)

I have a V7 (chunky) with a aftermarket flip top cover that i use Swap Magic with .
And a V12 (slim) with a DMS4 Pro chip in it. I love the chip. They even have real good solderless chips these days (DMS4 EZI)
