Hey there skippy_1,
A log file would be nice, perhaps a screen shot even. Details on the source file ie extension, the blank media, perhaps your burner and firmware version for it (the burner). You can use dvdinfopro to find out about the media, the burner and some other stuff. Go here to get it.

http://www.dvd-recordable.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=Reviews...

Also have you successfully burned anything with your current setup? If so we'll need to figure out if anything has changed such as the media, or a new softwrae having been installed for example Nero doesn't always work well with Roxio installed.

The log file is the window that shows step by step what Nero is doing as the burn begins, it will show where the error occurs and possibly why. The screen shot would be of the Nero interface again showing exactly what therror is, this is not a must have. Once you use DVDInfoPro you should onclude the info for each item media, burner, seperately so that anybody trying to help can read this post and know as much info as possible, anything less and they will simply be speculating on your troubles. Lastly there were a few questions for consideration in my first response that will help determine where you stand. For example whether or not you have burned anything with your current setup. What type of file is the source it may be encoded as SVCD, XviD, DivX, among other things. It must be the compatable format for the type of burn you are trying to produce. Example you can't download a movie in SVCD format and then burn it to dvd without bloating the file size back to it's original value. If you download say a multi disk SVCD that totals around 2100 MB (3 disks) you may not fit that 2100 MB on a DVD as the file will bloat by at leats 2.5x or so. With virtually no info to go on I think that you may have to convert the downloaded file from say XviD or DivX to DVD. Read this guide and see if it applies to you.

http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/multiple_formats_to_dvd_w...

It appears that your firmware is v0054 check this link to see if you can find your burner and most current version. You may have to look under the manufacturer's website if you don't find it here.

http://www.americal.com/pg/dvd-burner-writer-firmware-version-upd...

Finally read through the guides section there are several for using Nero but again it depends on your source file you can burn Bin/Cue, VCD, SVCD etc.

Sorry that this isn't much help yet but once there are more details I'm sure that someone in here can help; they always do.

Below is a copy of a log generated for my blank media usin DVDInfoPro

skippy_1,

I will try to do this step by step so that you can follow but there is still some info that we may need to get.

#1......In the first paragraph there is a line that says recorder:
Quote:
Recorder: <DVDRW IDE1008> Version: 0054 - HA 1 TA 0 - 6.0.0.6 [/qoute]

This shows your recorder and firmware version I must admit that I still can't tell the name brand by this so please let me know.

Once we have the name brand we can look up you firmware to see if yours is out of date. Here is a second site that provides firmware:

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1941 and http://cdrinfo.com/Sections/Firmware/SingleModel.aspx?DriveId=1008

#2......The very next paragraph details the ScSi map:
Quote:
=== Scsi-Device-Map ===
DiskPeripheral : WDC WD1200BB-98DWA0 atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: On
CdRomPeripheral : DVDRW IDE1008 atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : SONY CD-ROM CDU5211 atapi Port 1 ID 1 DMA: Off
=======================
This shows that your DMA is turned off go here to see how to turn it on: http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm

#3.......Skip the next paragraph and goto where it shows the actual burn process:
Quote:
22.7.2005

Video CD
10:53:42 PM #1 Phase 82 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1852
Encoding video

10:53:42 PM #2 Text 0 File VCDCompilationImpl.cpp, Line 476
Using Nero Video Converter version 0.00

10:53:42 PM #3 AVIVCDFILEITEM -103 File VCDFileItem.cpp,

10:53:42 PM #4 Text 0 File AVIVCDFileItem.cpp, Line 902
Temporary file C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp deleted

10:53:42 PM #5 Text 0 File VCDDoc.cpp, Line 2527
This appears to show that the whole process from beginning to end failed within 1 second according to the time stamp I have made bold the first and last times stamped.

It also shows that you are trying to burn to VCD format as shown in italics.

Then there is the situation that Nero is complaining about wich I have high lighted with asteriks. In short Nero is unable to create a name for the temporary file. This may be due to a bad name given by you which is not compatable with the file format. I'm no pro here but I think if you were to play around with it you can resolve your issue. Again I'm curious as to whether or not you have successfully burned anything with your current setup?

Hope this helps, By the way I don't have any IM installed so if you need you can simply PM me here.

hiya, here's what i would say to the logfile -

Nero version: 6.0.0.6 (Nero Express) - old
Recorder: <DVDRW IDE1008> Version: 0054 - firmware may be out of date but this is apparently not the best drive. it's a BTC drive by the way

DiskPeripheral : WDC WD1200BB-98DWA0 atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: On
CdRomPeripheral : DVDRW IDE1008 atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : SONY CD-ROM CDU5211 atapi Port 1 ID 1 DMA: Off - DMA needs sorting

Physical memory : 503MB (515564kB)
Free physical memory: 43MB (44356kB)
Memory in use : 91 % - atrocious free memory

Cannot create a temporary file name -i'd suspect no free memory and/or no free disc space - just a guess

WinXP SP2, Sony DRU-700A & LG-4480B, 120GB Seagate ATA100 8MB Buffer.
Verbatim DataLifePlus & a few Taiyo Yuden (TYG02) are the ONLY media allowed near my Burners.

..Memorex/CMC - don't let them near your Burner..... - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/195438
So again this is from someone who has been doing this for awhile and I'd bet that among some of the things that I'd already mentioned that your physical memory needs to be corrected; 503 MB should be sufficient but for some reason there isn't much free so as Creaky said
either your hard ddrive is packed or you have some pretty disk intensive programs running while your burning wich you shouldn't really be doing. See if any of this helps if not we'll try and work on it some more.

@skippy_1

For your 1008 drive go to the I/O Magic firmware update page and download the latest it is 0060

http://www.iomagic.com/Firmware/FirmwareDownload.html

Scroll down and find the IDE 1008 burner.

Yes, the drive that haunts me, it was one of my worst purchases next to Memorex disks, come to think about it the Memorex were better. Am thinking of a new BenQ to replace that worthless piece of junk.

Watch your burn speed and set target to 4300 to 4334
Quote:
Burn process started at 8x
Keep it to 4x.

Yes your disks to burn on, creaky already recommended Verbatim, and so do I. Set your drive burn speed to 4x in Nero before you burn.

..and make sure the blank disc is in drive before you click on burn, thus the drive will allow correct choices of burn speed
