Is it possible to take 5.1 audio off of a dvd and shrink it to 2 channel audio and then put it back in the dvd as 2 channel audio?

Any help is appreciated........

why don't you just select ONLY 5.1 audio. your tv/player etc will simply downmix the sound to normal stereo

It's actually to reauthor and save space for video when putting DVD9 on a dvdr

i wouldnt bother... you may invest in a home cinema at some point and then you will cry when they are all in stereo...

ok, so pro-logic 2 is not bad but compared to 5.1 or DTS on a decent system its not even close

i h8 getting DVDs in stereo - some rentals are still coming through as stereo!

It's not for audio purposes

It is for saving space for video point blank

Doesn't anyone know how to do it instead of giving me advice, lol?

i don't know if it can be done (doubt it very much - they're 2 distinct audio types).

after 1000+ more burns using just DVD Shrink, i can pretty much safely say that keeping only 5.1 audio is good enough for most people's purposes...

Looking at a number of movies the 5.1 track (not DTS) is usually 300-400 MB. The 2 Channel is typically 100-200 MB. Selecting the 2 channel would only save about 200 MB (usually a little less). This will not make much difference in the additional room for video. Granted there is some but not really that much.

Looking around have not yet found a way to do this. If I do I will post back with results.

I agree the amount of space that you save is not worth the effort, and there are times when the 2channel is the director's comments and the 5.1 is the movie audio.

yup - i still dont know why they bother with stereo - when 5.1 downmixes to stereo if you dont have a AV amp anyway

if your botherd about the video quality, becasue of the space of the audio the differnce you would save you would not telll the differnce.

shrink etc are very good compressers and the extra 300Mb etc would not be noticible in video quality. me personally i take the video and only the AC3 5.1 sound and the differnce in picture quality isent noticible.

i would of course like to take the DTS sound but until the next generation of disks come out with more space i will just stick with AC3.

Thanks everyone (even though no one could answer my question) ;)

I realized whith help from the responses) an xtra 300 mb wouldn't make a noticeable diffirence in the video quality

If it's video quality you're concerned about I recommend useing better software, DVD-RB/CCE for example is the best encoder period under $2000. I encode 6.5-7 gb on average (sometimes more sometimes less) all the time without ANY noticable loss in video quality on my 52" HDTV. Some encode the entire DVD9 to a DVD5 with these apps and notice only minimal loss in video quality. I've done a few complete dvd9's to dvd5's and had to strain to notice any loss in quality.

the only way I can think of is to completely reauthor the disc. Strip the video and audio into seperate streams, then import the audio into another program (a program designed to do this most likely will not do video as well) to remake it as 2-channel, then you'll have to put them back together, the result being worse quality probably than just having the 100-200MB less on the original video.

I don't know of any programs that will do this, but there's a program out there for everything nowadays.
