DVD cannot read dvd's put can read data CD R

Hi there,
I have a LITE-ON DVD RW SOHW-1653S
and my PC is an Intel Pentium 3 processor 799 MHz 512Mb of Ram
This DVD was working fine until a couple of days ago, if I insert a DVD in the player, it will try and read it and then the light (green) will just stop and if I click on the DVD icon in 'My Computer' it states that the DVD is empty, on the other hand if I insert a normal CD R data CD the DVD player will read it.
Also, if I try to burn stuff onto a DVD using Nero, it will start burning and would stay on 1% completion then an error message would pop up saying 'Power Calibration Error'
If anyone could help, I would really appreciate it.

I had the same problem with my Pioneer drive. Would read a cd fine but wouldn't recognise a dvd. Tried everything from cleaning and reflashing the drive to uninstalling from device manager and re-installing. Followed a suggestion I found on AD about removing upper and lower class filters and that worked for awhile. In the end I wound up replacing my drive, couldn't complain much after so many back-ups though! Really look into problem here and I'm sure you will find something to help. Good luck!

Yeah thanks for the tip, I will try and figure something out, what is reflashing and upper and lower class filter, could you explain to me what that is or how to modify these things please.
