I used Nero burning 6.6.0.8 to burn avis and mpg files to a DVD -R 8x "Imation" using DVD-Iso. The burning process ended successfully, but when I tried to watch them with Windows media player or VLC media player they won't work. I tried Gspot to analyze the files, the ones from my hardisk are ok, the ones I burned are not. I have a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-K12D, with Windows XP Professional SP2. Is this a problem with Nero? Please help me!

there may be a few settings/things to change, however first on the list is Imation media. it's crap. see first page in the 2nd link in my signature for Imation horror stories

secondly, we need LAST section of your Nero log which is in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log, but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar

- firmware appears to be up to date, abeit old. you might have problems with newer media as the firmware may be too old to recognise newer discs. Have a look at first page or 2 in the media forum here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/forum_view.cfm/47 for media recommendations, bearing in mind the max speed discs you can get for that drive..

- i see, the Imation discs appear to be Fuji. I don't know much about Fuji myself. As i say, look thru the media forum. The thing with companies such as Imation, Memorex, a lot of store brand media etc, is they use varying manufacturers for the discs.
For example, here's a (not up to date) snippet re Imation discs -

Imation DVD+R 2.4x (RICOHJPNR00)
Imation DVD+R 4x (CMC MAG.F01)
Imation DVD+R 4x (RICOHJPNR01)
Imation DVD+RW 2.4x (CMC MAG.W01)
Imation DVD+RW 2.4x (RICOHJPNW01)
Imation DVD+RW 4x (RICOHJPNW11)
Imation DVD-R 1x (RITEKG03....)
Imation DVD-RW 1x (OPTODISCK001)

- in brackets are the media codes, in fact look at the 2nd and 3rd lines - the Ricoh ones may be good (don't know if they are myself), but the CMC ones are utter rubbish), yet externally they're both sold as Imation DVD+R 4x.

here's one opinion of some media that use same media code as yours - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/204503
and here where someone was using Datawrite discs which have the same media code as yours - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/211428

Some doubts:
Firmware: I checked it with a tool downloaded from the Pioneer support site. The drive was recognized as Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-k12D 1.10, but to my surprise it said "Model: Not pioneer model. (OEM products)". Does this mean I won't have the possibility to upgrade the firmware? (I've seen latest version of the same DVD in other forums)
DMA: If I uninstall the Secondary IDE channel (as advised) to set the DMA ON, will I have troubles with my external hard drives? (they are usually the source for burning)
Memory: during burning I was downloading files from a p2p SW, is it better not to run any other thing when burning?
Nero: I just installed the last version without InCD.
So I'm almost ready, thanks a lot for your help, I'll be waiting for your reply.

You should be able to set DMA without uninstalling anything. Doing that is usually reserved for times that it can't be set normally. Uninstalling and then rebooting however is perfectly safe and will not cause hard drive problems.

I usually set DMA like this:
http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/dvdguide005.html

Did you run the Nero clean tools as creaky suggested? They really help. These are the Registry Checker and Driver Clean tools.

Don't use your PC for anything else while ripping or burning DVDs. That is just asking for problems. These are resource intensive operations and require a lot of performance from your PC memory and processor.

That being said, you still show a successful burn so maybe the files themselves are the problem...

I think that maybe you burned something that was not DVD-Video compliant. You cannot burn .avis or mpegs without converting them into a DVD-Video compliant format. At least not if you expect them to play like a DVD. Can you describe what you did to the .avis and mpegs before burning them? Did you author them or use some sort of conversion program?

Yes, I used the Nero cleaning tools before installing. I burned avis and mpgs to a DVD media as data files, using DVD-ROM ISO function. All the burned files run correctly from my hard disk, but some of them don't run from the burned DVD. Forgive my ignorance, I thought that being burned as data, there was not need to do anything to make them DVD-compliant, so I did nothing. What should I do first to the files to get them play from the DVD after burning? Thank you so much for your support. Any advice for the firmware?

Thanks Creaky for the reply. I would like to know what is the decent

DVD+R and DVD-R Media? Is Lite-On DVD Writer good?
