Maddog 4x1 DVD Burner Buffer Problems

I've recently upgraded my firmware on a Maddog external USB 2.0 4in1 Dominator DVD Burner, and it worked fine for about a day. Now, everytime I try and use Nero (or any other burner really, but I mostly use Nero) it will burn CD's/DVD's fine, but the buffer seems to be whacked.

Prior to the firmware upgrade, when buring a CD, the buffer would slowly fill up and stay 100% filled for the whole burn - like it should. Post-update, the buffer goes nuts and drops from 87% to 17% back up to 90% (etc) for the whole burn. This makes a CD take 14 min at 48X. I've tried a whole bunch of speeds, different options in NERO, turning buffer underrun protection off, but nothing makes any difference. I'd rather not use older firmware if I don't have to. Can't find anything on the Maddog site about this. Anyone ever hear of something similar?

Also, latest burn has produced the following error message -

whenever i burn CD's i usually do 24, maybe 16x

..worth a try ?...
