I first did a test and it worked fine as you saw, so the problem seems to be the drive's firmware or something along those lines. i really could use some advice if anyone has any ideas. thanks to all of you for you help. steve

Hello, I8Night and Creaky thanks for your help! I downloaded the TS10 and sfdwin to update the firmware on the drive as you both recommened. after restarting my computer and making my first attempt, i reduced the write speed to 8x and went for burn, only seconds later i recived this error,

if you mean like in my diagram, it has to be unticked - that's what's causing the problem

could it have something to do with the settings in DVD Decrypter? I have all the setting at defaults, and the lock volume - exclusive access is checked along with enable burn-proof and cycle tray. what does that mean and do anyway? thanks again creaky

you need it unchecked, as that's what's interfering withh Decrypter, that's XP's freebie crappy burner facility
