Hi, I'm fairly new to p2p file shareing and i'm having some problems downloading certain stuff. I have broadband which i just got installed a few days ago, I thought id have no probs downloading full films or games. But when I try downloading a film, it comes up 12 - 15 hours to download? Its broadband homestarter 1mb that I have, am I doing something wrong? Over the last few weeks it was taking me 10-15mins to download a song, now only about 2-3mins which is great, but i really want to get some films. Also ive downloaded about 20 games, crimsonland, mario bros ect.. and everyone contained a virus and had to be deleted. Is it possible to download games that actually work ?

hey dude,

firstly, let's get a few things straight:

what p2p app. do u use?
what is the length/format of the types of movies ur trying to dload

also, with games on p2p you have to be careful. there are some some ways of avoiding the virus filled games. the main thing is to think about it in proportion. if you are dloading a game like halo/splinter cell, these are big games which will probably be in the region of 500 mb plus, so anything under that is probably a fake or virus. if it is a smaller game, like u said mario bros, then it will be smaller. anyway give me some more details and ill try help yaz.

peace

Hi, thanks 4 replyin, I have limewire and also eTomi pro which is like a replica of limewire. It'a an AVI file im tryin to download, the size of the first one was 708.9mb and the second was 56,331kb. When I download songs i reached up to 90 kb/s but when i try movies, it might start that big but within seconds its down to 10 or lower kb/s and then fizzles down to nothing! With the games, i must have tried crimsonland 10 times and most over the size of 500mb but all were virusus, i tried downloadind many games and all were virusus. Unbelieveable!! Any tips or hints ?

hmmmm.....

well all i can recommend to u is that u give ares a try. i mean i, like u, use lwire for my music but i find that ares has a better selection of games and also more of them work. and it also has quite a range of videos. on ares, i can recommend halo. u can get it its about 570 000 kb (be careful, there are halos of other sizes that dnt work)you dont have to get this, obviously. but its fun and u can play online against other ppl.

sorry, thats all the advice i have.

good luck

- Ok, tell us how exactly you'r connecting to the internet. Router? Firewall?
- Do a speedtest for us > http://www.dslreports.com/stest

LimeWire isn't exactly the best app to download large files.

I highly reccomend BitTorrent >

BitTorrent ? A file distribution protocol used to distribute large files to multiple points without extraordinary bandwidth demands on the source.
The user has to visit torrent sites such as

http://www.mininova.org
http://www.isohunt.com
http://www.torrentspy.com
http://www.solops2.com
http://www.x-torrent.net
http://www.thepiratebay.org
http://www.emuparadise.org
http://www.torrentbox.com
http://www.mybittorrent.com
http://www.filelist.org

and download the .torrent files to open up in a BitTorrent client (such as BitLord, Azereus, ABC, BitTornado, BitSpirit, TorrentStorm etc.) to download.

Hi, thanks for the advice lethal, cheers. Mik3h I'm connecting thru firewall, I couldn't get a speed test thru that link, I tried a few ways but it wouldn't allow me. However I have an icon on my desktop that say's "Speed 1024/128{kbps}", from my isp. That ok ? BitTorrent, is that as handy to use as limewire, winwix ect... Are downloads faster? thanx

if you are a beginner, which it appears you are, i would recommend limewire as it is the simplest app to use and has a large range of content. BT is good if you want to find something really specific like a tv episode or something. But Can Be Slightly Harder To Use For The Beginner

BitTorrent is generally faster, If you get access to the latest torrents, then they tend to have a higher number of seeds. {Sources}

If you'r connecting through a firewall, you MUST open ports to allow these programs to connect. Find out which ports the P2P programs use to listen and open them up in your firewall.

Thanks lethal, I do hear where your comeing from but to be quiet honest I just cant download a film whatsoever, songs are fine, im hittin over a 100 kb/s and there done in no time at all. I did actually get to download a game without a virus {1st 1}. I can download music videos fairly good but when I try a film id be lucky to get max 35 kb/s which would take forever to download and then mostly it tumbles down to 6-7-15 kb/s. With bt what speeds would you reckon you'd hit ? Do the games still contain virusus useing bt ? Thanks

Hey Agen. Yeh U Can fiddle with the ports on the limewire options menu. im not expert enough to tell u which ones to open/change but if u ask a senr. member im sure theyll know. as for bt. it is harder to use if u dont know what to do. you can get the simple .AVI . mpeg etc files on there but a lot of them are .torrent files. i find bt really useful though for full albums etc and videos. all u have to do is check the torrent and it will tell you if they are. torrent or mp3/avi etc etc. if someone with a better knowledge of BT could expand here, please help because i myself would also like to know what to do with .torrent files. thanks

Thanks 4 the reply lethal, yes I will try learn a bit more about bt before I get goin on it. For the time being I downloaded the latest limewire edition and I have to say it seems top class compared to the basic which I was useing. For the first time I actually hit 117 kb/s on a programme and I actually got my first complete film, though it took awhile. I'd like to get going on the bt fairly shortly but I'll try learn a bit more about it first. Thanks again.

just a mention, I see an ad for MyMusicInc.com when I do be posting msg's on here. Don't know if I should be saying this but I'd strongly advise any newbies or anybody to steer clear of it. When I was just starting to download stuff, I saw this ad, somethin like $39 for unlimited downloads. I have to say I fell for the trick, they give you the basic limewire, and supposedly uleads movie factory that burns your downloaded films to dvd. wrong, they say "download uleads movie factory here", but when you try the page eventually expires. And when I asked for tech help, which they guarntee to give you within 48 hours, I got nothing. after sending about 5 mails to them, I sent a snotty one saying that they suck, next day they replied "what was the problem again" and then no other replies after I constantly mailed them. All this was b4 I knew most p2p can be accessed free. Anyway that's my opinion.

game emulators are free and so are most older game roms do a search on the web for emulators or roms and you can find virus free ones, downloads speeds for files from limewire and winmx all depend on the speed of the user you are getting them from.not much more you can you do about it besides wait for a faster user.

Hi, thanks 4 that info Jazto, I see what you mean, I just went briefly thru it today, the problem I had was I couldn't open the file for the rom. I can only open .exe at the min but I'll look into how to open the other type of files, so cheers. Peaches24, the only free music you'll get is on p2p as far as I'm aware, I downloaded "limewire", which gives you access to music, films and programmes. If you do download "limewire", type limewire, in the programmes box and then search, from there you can download the latest edition of limewire, which I think is pretty good. If you do want to download limewire and you can't find it on this site, go to www.download.com and you can download for free as far as I can remember. Make sure you read all the legal mumbo jumbo about p2p, then you decide if you want to use it.

Whiteboy2, afraid I'm not that well up on ports at the min so maybe the other members will help you out on that, just to say though, I'm hittin up to 117 kb/s on limewire and last night I tried emule out for the first time. I went through the same with the ports, it was tellin me it couldn't access certain ports, after messin around for awhile, turns out it was my router that was blockin the ports. Finally when I got it all sorted I thought I was away but only to start downloading at 5-7 kb/s at max and that was only a song. Also it was tellin me I had a high ID which should be good. Don't know what the problem was there, anyway emule is now gone from my system.

alrite sandisk.

wow 117kbps on a one meg? wicked. i am just in the process of upgradin from the standard 512kbps. i find it strange how u can get 117kbps on 1mb but on the 512k the max ive ever got is 37. hey sandisk wats the max amount of seeds/peers you get wen ur dloading something. ill also recommend edonkey to all. i tried it the other day and i have to say its better than my trusty old limewire because it found and dloaded files that didnt even come up in the search on limewire! mate emule is pretty crap. try edonkey. theyre pretty similar but edonkey is faster all round. how u goin with bit torrent? ive also bin usin that because it has bloodi everytin!

holla back.

Hi Lethal, yeah I have to say since I got the latest limewirePro 4.9.11 my speed has shot up. Since I got the latest edition, I'm downloading from 10 sources and I'm gettin them high dl speeds. The other limewire, I was gettin 6 sources max. Have to say, even on single sources I'm hittin up to 50kb/s, that was just a song tho. I'm very happy with this edition of limewire, I've tried a few others like winmix and etomi and in my opinion they don't compare. I even downloaded certain programmes at over 100 kb/s, so I'm happy! In regards to emule, jesus I read the tutorial and messed around 4 ages gettin it sorted and it pissed me off and was a major let down. I know I'm only a novice but I tried downloading 4 different things, 3 wouldn't dl at all ! And the forth was a basic song that would take on average 2mins to dl and was only goin somethin like 5kb/s and it told me all my ports were ok. edonkey ? Useing edonkey, does most of the stuff u find download ? What would you recommend ?

lol. did u buy the new limewire pro?? i found that e-donkey was the best for me, but everyones pc/connection is different! i personally have a combo of 4. limewire for music(nuthin beats) lol ares for the odd song that alwys corrupts on limewire edonkey for loadsa different stuff mainly movies theres lots of them there. if you give it a try, i recommend it! although it just depends how ur pc works with it. i use bt occasionally for the tv series- everything is neat and tidy on BT, whereas limewire has lots of hidden porn and the odd fake file, as well as your virus filled games ;) lol BT doesnt have this problem (on the whole)if ur gna try bt, id say first of all t aint as efficient as lwire but it does a good job. id recommend bit lord if ur gna get a client, although you can use edonkey as ur client also. and yes, everything ive searched for and downloaded has completed sucessfully (albeit iv only got about 2 gigs worth of stuff of there, but still mighty impressed. so can u dload a whole movie (talkin bout the divx/avi/xvid ones) in like an hour or 2? it takes me about 6! lol well roll on 2 daiz wen i get me 1 meg! ps any major changes in the lwire pro 4.9.11?

Leathal it'a a dog eat dog world out there lol , so no I didn't buy the latest limewire, I downloaded it through the old version. I do think there is some good changes, as geestar20 said the face of it looks different but there's no pop up saying buy pro cause the latest is limewirePro 4.9.11, but in my opinion you get more results for your search and the speed's are definitely faster, as you can prob remember I was moaning about slow speed's b4 but like I said I'm happy with this for the time being at least. I'll prob give bt a try 2morrow, so if you have any more tips, let me know plz.
