Hi all, just upgraded my system and while it runs things like Windows much faster, games don't tend to be much different than my old system:
Old system:
CPU: AMD 64 3200+ 512 kb cache (socket 754)
Memory: 2x PC3200 512mb (don't know brand)
Motherboard: Asus KN8 HP small form factor
GPU: BFG GeForce 6800 ULTRA OC 256mb 8x AGP
HD: 80GB Maxtor (not SATA)
OS: XP
PSU:550w
I benched it on 3dMark '03 and got about 11'000.

New system:
CPU: AMD 64 3700+ Socket 939 1mb cache
Same memory config
Motherboard: Asus A8N SLi Deluxe
GPU: Gigabyte GeForce 7800 GTX 256mb
Same HD, same PSU and still running XP. I benched on 3dmark 03 and only got about 11'800. I then OC'd the card a little and got about 12'300. I thought after spending £700 I'd have a shit hot machine! I mean it's still pretty amazing but games like HL2 and Doom 3 still get a bit jumpy with Vsync on. Am I expecting too much? I don't have any cooling other than 1 case fan, 1 CPU fan but the CPU and GPU temps are well within limits (30 - 50 degrees).

Apologies if there is a thread that covers this.

My 6800 hit 10751. (It's a 6800LE Gainward rivatuned to 16 Pixel pipelines) Your new card should be better than your old one. By how much is debateable. Your old card is kick-ass anyway. The thing to make the difference in your scores is your card. After a while, fast CPUs make little difference.

I am amazed at your low scores. You have changed the anti-aliasing & anisoptric filtering I take it? Turn EVERYTHING off whilst benching, I mean everything. I even turn off my desktop background to free up resources. PS, myself & all my mates have our vertical synch turned off as the norm.

Yeah when benchmarking I always turn all AA off etc and run in 1024 resolution. It's just annoying as I've read how good the 7800 card is and i though it would make a huge difference but it just doesn't. So don't waste your money if you're thinking of buying one! The BFG 6800 Ultra even in AGP form is just as good.

Hi mate, I really don't know the answer to that one I'm afraid. All I can say is that it's a Q-Tec gold dual fan 550w PSU.

the 7800gtx requires atleast 26a on the 12 volt line to operate normal. in sli it requires 34a on the 12volt line. your problem is it is not getting enough juice! especially if you have alot of other hardware running to. time to upgrade!

If the card was not getting enough juice, it would not work. The PSU is not the problem here. My 6800 has its own power connector. I run 3 HDs, 4 Optical drives, 6 fans & lots of UVs etc. I have a 500W PSU.

It's got 2 power connectors from the PSU going direct to the GPU (not using a Y splitter). So any more ides why the performance seems to be lacking?

Have only installed the mobo drivers that came with it. I assumed (maybe wrongly) that the mobo is pretty new so I wouldn't need new drivers. Got the latest drivers from Nvidia for the 7800gtx tho.

the card came from the factory with the new 77.72 drivers. thats why nvidia released these new drivers, so these cards would be supported.

the 77.72 drivers from nvidia was rushed to support BattleField 2 and has video issues, Upgrade to the 77.76 drivers or later.

Thanks guys, am downloading new drivers now. By the way......on the Nvidia display panel under Graphics card information it says "Bus: PCI Express x1". Should this not be x16?

Or am I getting my info wrong??

Oops! I'd plugged the card in the wrong PCI-E slot! Sorted it now and have new drivers too. Just run 3Dmark 2003 and scored 16500. A bit better than 11800. Thanks for all the tips.

How in the name of sweet jesus did they get 22'000 on an air cooled rig??!! I've OC'd my card to a max of 499mhz (core) and 1.32ghz (memory). It won't go any higher than that without causing crashes etc.
