Hey everyone,

Since I have an 8-year old stereo JVC receiver, I'm looking to upgrade to a surround sound receiver, and a good quality one too. Sound is probably more important to me than the video so that's why I'm getting the receiver before an HDTV flat screen.

I really like the Harman Kardon DPR2005 (7.1 Digital Path Receiver, 120W/channel) ($1,600USD). This seems to be the only receiver with almost 100% digital path - its amp. is digital too. It's relativelly small and light-weight (no linear power supply, transformers, or large heatsinks for MOSFETs).

However, looking at the specs for it and the HK AVR7300 ($2,200USD), it seems that the AVR7300 has better SNR and better specs (frequency response, etc.). How is this possible? I thought that the main benefit of DPR is being noise-free, compared to standard receivers.

Also, I thought Harman Kardon were the best for that price range (just above Sony, Yamaha, Pioneer and the rest of the regular home electronics companies). However, many of you here use Denon, Marantz and some other companies which I guess I have no experience with over here in Canada. Are they better than H/K?

BTW my main two speakers are JBL MRV308, which are capable of up to 150W. I also have an older (but good) pair of 2-way Sony speakers for my rear surround sound. I still need to get a centre and a woofer.

Your advice with which way to go is appreciated. Thanks!

If you don't mind a refurbed receiver, you can get pretty decent deals at http://www.overstock.com
Some say refurbed is better than new, because the bugs have been fixed. You can buy extra warranty cheap too............
Worth looking at.

Also, if you liked your old JVC, look at the new ones. I think you get more bang for your buck, with JVC.
Good luck with whatever you decide on.
