PSP memory stick question.

I am trying to buy PSP and I went to website and it said you require a memory stick duo MEDIA(ONLY) to directly play the music file of ur memory stick. Is that true? Or you can play music off any MEMORY STICK DUO? or just the MEDIA VERSION? or both of them are same thing?
