First off I have no idea why it would be looking for channel 9, so I can't tell you how to determine the right one to reprogram. However, let's say that you are looking for TBS to be on channel 9, an it is either not in your area or on another channel. You would go to the manual channel setup menu (under "Setup" in the menu bar over Listings), find TBS, and on the *right side* of the listing type in 9. Then hit the green "Chapter" button on thebottom of the remote to turn it on (if it is off--as it probably is).
You say "I have discovered that my local cable company does not have channel 9 (even though it is a local channe!)." Remember that the channel *number* is totally irrelevant in cable and sattelite systems. They tune by *call sign*. So, if your local station is KZZZ on chanel 9, look for KZZZ on some other channel and see if that isn't the programming you want. On the other hand, if KZZZ is an NBC affiliate, you might look for another NBC affiliate on your cable system.
Finally, since it is a local station, yo may not be paying for the *extra* package of including local broadcast stations on your cable. Not all cable compaies include broadcast stations and the ones that do may not incude *all* of them. Check with your cable guide. If it isn't listed, you can't get it from *them*. On the other hand, by hooking up an antenna, you can get it locally--just put the antenna on the antenna connection of your tv, pvr, or vcr and hook the cable box up to the video input. Or you could use an RF-to-Video converter and put the antenna on the Video port.
*Or* you could get a cheap antenna switch from Radio Shack and manually switchbetween them.
