Nero No Longer Burning DVD

Hello! I think this forum is great but I can find an answer to my problem. I recently upgraded my firmware for Lite On SOHW832S DVD/RW/ Combo Burner. I had been using Nero to burn DVD's for the past 9 months with no coasters. After the firmware upgrade I also upgraded to Nero 6.6.0.16. Nero still burns CD's fine but will not burn a DVD. The burner stays stuck at 1% and eventually stops or freezes. When I try to abort the session I can't. I have to manually power down the system.
I used Nero General Cleaning Tool to uninstall and reinstall Nero. Still no luck. I also tried installing Adaptec's newest aspi layers but that also failed. I can't think of anything else. The burner worked fine just a week ago. I know there has to be a software conflict somewhere but I can't find it! If anybody can help it would be great. Here is the log file:

You said you reinstalled Nero but did you try reinstalling the old version that worked? Every update I've put on my machines after 6603 won't even let me drop files on a compilation. Nero just closes with no error. Try the version that worked before. If that doesn't do it, try another burning software. If nothing works, then you might have to try to get back to the old revision of your DVD drive. Maybe the firmware update is bad. I'd suspect Nero first though. I don't know how many times I've seen my bug listed as "fixed" in the update but when I install the same thing happens. For me 6603 Nero Burning Rom is it. It works, so I quit fixing it. :)
The other thing to look out for is if your Registry is hosed. I didn't get Nero freezing but on 2 machines I got Nero jumping from 95% to 5% hardware buffer indication and burns taking like 8 times longer than usual. A system restore fixed it but I think my Registry got corrupted due to Autoplay trying to execute data from rewritable discs. Anyway, I'd save the System Restore as last resort since it's most likely Nero update is the problem.

I've had this same problem (also with DVD Decryptor) since I updated my Plextor drives firmware to 1.08 & then Nero to the 66015 version.
The exact same buffer problems! I cleaned my registry (found 416 problems) so if that doesn't fix it then it's either the new firmware or Nero.
Getting the brand new version of Nero right now. If that doesn't fix it them I'm dropping my DVD drives firmware to 1.07 which was a version I used that worked great. If that still doesn't fix it then I'm dropping nero below the 66015 version. Good thing I saved old copies of Nero!!!
I'm really tired of buffer problems (super high CPU usage which slows the computer way down) that give me DVD coasters at 2.4x!
To be specific my hardware & drive buffers can't keep up (with Decryptor or Nero) like they used to. In the past I could burn up to 16x even though I normally burned at 8x for data & 4x for DVD video from SVCD mpg files using Nerovision Express. What are the files? Old TV shows...

Thanks for all the suggestions. I reinstalled Windows XP and went back to the original Nero OEM that came with my burner. Everything is ok now, but what a pain. I am not going to upgrade Nero for awhile until the bugs are worked out of the new version!

Updating firmwire lately has been the cauuse of alot of peoples misfortunate drive corruptions. Note* that all manufactures cauton is that updating firmwire should be a last resort after all other options fail!!!....
Looking at your history log.... you are using a ton of memory then somewhere the caching leaves.....Ill loook more into your problem. But just incase the firmwire update could have ruined your drive.. Good news is that maybe a simple format of hardisk or changing the drives jumper settings could resolve it.

firmware is a very necessary part of keeping stuff up to date. Granted it's frought with the danger of making a drives unusable if instructions aren't followed, however it most definitely is necessary. As is keeping up with software updates.
However what i recommend is always lagging behind a week or more, thus letting other 'early adopters' get hit by any potential bugs before you do. This is the same principle i apply at work, with firmware for Uinx servers and patches for the operating system/programs

creaky, is there such a thing as a firmware ripper? I'm thinking the most dangerous update is the first one because you don't have a firmware update proven to work. So if you happen to download malicious code(which has happened to me with an external modem) and run the update and get a paperweight, there's no way to go back.
Guess it helps if you have multiple machines with identical drives and proven firmware revisions you can fall back on. But for everyday user with one machine it's risky to fix it if it ain't broken.
Any thoughts of precautions you can take to get back to square one if the firmware hoses your drive?

qaa. I see that in the log now. Yes I have the latest ASPI and also the Nero patches. Even those did not work.
Ruud00 I did solve my problem ...sort of. It was a bit extreme but I used the Symantec PC Restore to return my computer settings to the way it was when I got it. I then reinstalled my Windows XP and loaded my old Nero OEM software back on to the system which is version 6.3.1.11. That did the trick. I am back in business for now!

Hey. I had the same problem... it would stop at 1%, or I would just end up with a lot of coasters... and I finally figured out that I needed to download the "InCD" drivers for Nero. I haven't had a failed burn since.

Thats strange. I never had InCD on my computer (& never the Roxio version) and burns with both Nero & DVD Decryptor started messing up since I updated Nero to the latest version. I'm still going to pull Nero off of my computer then install the last version I had which worked fine. Hopefully it will...

Well ive just installed InCD and it seemed to do the trick , i burnt a dvd alrite using nero after installing InCD.

am glad InCD has it's uses for some of you, we usually recommend uninstalling it as it causes more problems than it solves. but good for some of you as i've said.
But those of you who are having unexplained Nero problems, pls post LAST section of your Nero log which is in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log, but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.
Nerovision log files are in a fairly similar place, but are called nerovision.txt i think...

That is strange, the majority of members here at afterdawn, including myself, don't recommend "InCD or Roxio" to be installed on your computer with your Nero. However, if it works for you, then more power to you.
Believe it or not I've never installed them 2 programs on my computer even though I have them, and every back ups/burns of mine works flawlessly with Nero solo.

A month ago, I could back-up any of my DVDs using shrink and Nero no problem. Went to di it yesterday and was getting some errors after encoding and so forth... I then went and updated my Nero software (after copying this log file) and it still does the same thing. PLEASE HELP. Another step I will take is to get a different type of media I guess.. Any help? Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.
Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC).
This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times.
If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (amost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder.
Please try the following solutions:
Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.
Try another brand of CD-R or CD-RW media.
Try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the error occurs with an external recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the external chassis and connect it internal.
Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.
Send the recorder in for service

- uninstall Nero's InCD, it gets in the way. Uninstall Nero, uninstall completely via Nero's Clean Tools - " Nero.com/en/Clean_Tools.html" class="korostus" target="_blank">http://www.Nero.com/en/Clean_Tools.html " and while you're at it, you might want to install 6.6.0.16 of Nero; either way do NOT install Nero's InCD this time..

I have the identical problem as the original poster: updated liteon sohw-832s firmware and now Nero sticks at 1% before "illegal disc" error. I plan on trying the suggestion of InCD, but in the mean time I've found a quick "fix" to be changing the drives properties under Nero by unselecting "DVD high compatibility mode (at least 1 GB will be written)". I'm not sure why this works, but I read about it in another column and tried it. It's not a total fix though since burning from NVE and Nero recode still doesn't work.
