I know you guys are tired of this topic...I've read the varius links on how to address this and none seem to work--
1) I have a new NEC 3540A, firmware is uptodate (only one version available);
2) I've cleaned the drive and compressed air blew it; updated Nero to latest version;
3) tried lower speeds but when the burn completes successfully I can't play the DVD in either my computer or DVD player and don't get a log file to share;
4) have media that the database says is good.
5) checked DVD Shrink to make sue size no to end of DVD
One other note is that I notice that the buffer level frequently (every couple of seconds drops back down to 7% from 97% while burning and it takes a long to time burn if it does in fact burn--then most of the time the burned disc won't play).
Only twist is that everything works fine if I use my old +R media---the -R has the problem. I bought them on ebay (1500 of them) and the seller won't take them back so trying to make the most of a bad situation! Here is one of my failure logs...Please let me know if you see anything elese here. Thanks.

- you're burning too close to the outer edge of discs. If you use DVD Shrink, set target size in Shrink's preferences to 4300MB thus avoiding edge of discs and not sacrificing much space

- i guess you won't be buying media off ebay again!. Plus what do the discs actually say on the top, ie they're not Bulkpaq are they ? (FAKE Taiyo Yuden discs if so). The media code alone does not make these discs genuine.

Quote: Power calibration error
- quote from "http://www.nero.com/en/FAQs_Error_Messages.html#9 - "
Quote: "9. I get a 'Power calibration error' or 'Calibration area (almost) full' error message. Why?
Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.
Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC).
This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times.
If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (amost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder.
Please try the following solutions:
Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.
Try another brand of CD-R or CD-RW media.
Try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the error occurs with an external recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the external chassis and connect it internal.
Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.
Send the recorder in for service."

Thanks for the quick reply. Clearly, the media is the problem here...my old DVD+Rs work just fine but not the new stuff (and I have a boat load of them!) Well, I'll try uninstalling Roxio and using smaller DVD Shrink files. I noticed before that when I slowed down I would get unplayable DVDs...but I'll give it a shot too. What do I have to loose at this time, but time?
Message to others--Don't buy media off ebay!!!!!

quick update...I removed roxio and tried writting a small/short DVD. It worked. I then tried a fullsized DVD...it didn't work. I used DVD Shrink to squeez it down a little more to 4300mb...it worked. So size may not be everything, but here it seems to count for much (in reverse). If you don't hear more from me, then know that your solution worked. Thanks again for helping save my investment in bad media.

hehehe, im curious as well as im pretty sure they are FAKE Taiyo Yudens, those dvd identifier programs can only do so much, i use them as a guideline too, take a VERY close look at the inscription on the inner hub of one of your 1500 discs...tell me what it says and i'll tell you if you got GENUINE Tys or NOT...(im thinking not) :) sorry, but ebay is NOT the place to buy blank media, the great deals to be found are OFTEN TIMES too good to be true :)

look on the very tiny inscription on the INNER HUB...tell me what they say on them...might have to look very closely as it's laser inscribed very small on the inner hub (near the circle part) after the white part ends :) im just curious since you bought 1500 of them...

CRAP!!! That's what they are. Probably some manufacturer in Bumfuck, Egypt... Press that guy hard for selling you fake media. Complain with e-Bay and PayPal. BTW, who'd you buy it from (username)? I do my fair share of buying/selling on eBay, and knuckleheads like these make the market "hostile."

Take a look at the ad...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5221826012&rd=...
based on hid ratings i thought i could trust him. but the few negative comments indicates that he has shafted before.
I have been burning on 4300MB and it seems to work ok. I've double checked after writing to make sure i can read. Do you think there will be problems with the burned disc in the long run? will they go bad? or am i out of the woods on this bad investment?

I'd cut my losses and buy the real TY's from supermediastore.com
Most of the cheap discs I have used have degraded.
Oh and you still need to edit your serial number from your 1st post.
