Hi, I have a rather large video file on my computer (.mpg), actually, it is 5.7GB..... and I am not really sure how to compress it to fit on a regular DVD-R. Will nero do this automatically? Or is there another program out there that will do it :P thanks

If you are trying to convert the mpeg so it will play in a standalone DVD player you can use TMPGEnc Author to create DVD compliant files from the large mpeg file, then use DVD Shrink to shrink them to fit on a DVD. TMPGEnc Author will warn you that the DVD files your are about to create are too large. Just click ignore. Shrink will make them small enough to fit on a DVD. Use Nero to burn the files Shrink created.

If you are just trying to archive your mpeg file onto a DVD but still want to keep it as a mpeg you can either re-encode it to make it smaller or just split it in half.

TMPGEnc Plus or Mainconcept MPEG Encoder (many other encoders as well) will allow you to re-encode the mpeg to a lower bitrate or resolution which will make it smaller so it will fit on a single DVD.

If you don't want to compromise the quality you can always use an mpeg editor like VideoReDo or Cuttermaran to split the mpeg into two parts. You can then save each part onto a DVD and always copy them back to your hard drive later and rejoin them.

I'll sometimes use a simple file splitter utility to break large files into 2 or more pieces to archive on DVD which can then be rejoined later.
