I just got EAC. I slap in a cd, choose a track, click MP3, and EAC turns the track into a .wav. Why?

I live next door to my mail man.
Weird.

I've been to that site before. I just emailed Chris Mysden, so hopefully he will be able to shed some light on my problem.
Thanks.

EAC rips to WAV, but the executable LAME.EXE should compress the files afterwards. It must be incorrectly configured.

Yeah, I thought as much. How do I reconfigure it? What do I reconfigure?
I'm sort of a computer newbie, so I appreciate your patience!

when you set up eac, you should have gotten a screen about going through the setup wizard... if not, then go to options(I think)or file and there should be some thing about a wizard, run it, it sets up lame and configures every thing! if your a newb. tick the "beginers mode" if your not to sure on exactly which settings do what.

hope this helps,
Siren

Thirty,

Did you go through the setup process presented in that link carefully?

Compression options contain the settings for LAME.

The problem might be simpler than that. It would be funny if this was the actual problem.

By default, EAC puts the .WAV extension on all files (even the compressed ones). Under uncompressed extraction you'll end up with BIG .WAV files, on compressed extraction you'll end up with small .WAVs (true .MP3, in effect). This is very confusing, and I still do not understand the origin of this EAC criteria.

To put the .MP3 extension on compressed files, you have to follow the menus
EAC--> Compression Options, check the box 'do not write .WAV header to the file' and put '.MP3' on the box 'File extension for headerless files'

"EAC--> Compression Options, check the box 'do not write .WAV header to the file' and put '.MP3' on the box 'File extension for headerless files'"

I did this; well, I tried to. I tried to check the box, but I couldn't. In fact, I couldn't do anything in the Waveform section of the Compression Options menu. All the selections were gray -inactive.
I tried to follow the installation instructions carefully, but I think some of it may have been over my head. Perhaps I should reinstall?

What about a good run of EAC---> Configuration Wizard?
I cannot remember how did I install, but I do not think I had to download any codec ...

I'll run the wizard. If there anything I should do or change or keep in mind when I do run it?

Keep an unscratched and (optional) a scratched audio CD at hand.

Well, now that I remember you might also need a .MP3 codec.

I would suggest to grab LAME codec (Lame_enc.dll). Get it and put it in EAC directory.

More in general, try looking here for a good FAQ about EAC issues

Aldaco,

It is better to stick with the guide by Myden, especially if one doesn't know what he is doing. LAME.DLL can't be used for alt-presets with EAC (Am I right?).

I don't know what is considered, by the MP3 community, alt-preset now .
I have lame 3.91 and I can encode 320 kbps CBR or 256 kbps Minimum VBR.
Personally I encode 192 kbps CBR, it is a good mix between compression, compatibility and sound quality.

I also assume you're taking the necessary measures to properly thank our nice friend Munda for his advice, do you?

The file extension must be specified in the "External compression" part if the "Waveform" part is greyed out. There is another box there to specify MP3 instead of WAV.
