This is probably an unfixable problem, but it never hurts to get a second (or 3rd) opinion. My DVD burner won't read MID codes, or run the speed tests, CRC read error tests, or support bitsetting. I get the following error when trying to test:

Command028h returned:
Sense02h Not Ready
ASC 30h
ASCQ 02h Incompatible Format

Any thoughts? Since this older drive won't play new DVD's anyway, my thought was to give it to the poor and install a new Dual-layer Dual-format burner. Perhaps some buying suggestions?

Newegg.com for best prices & option to get the bare drive only (no instructions, no software, no cable, no fancy box). For a swap out, that's the way to go.
NEC 3540, Ben Q 1620, PioneerDVR-109 or 110, other good choices.
