I went to put more RAM in my old computer (custom built). But the 2 slots of 184 pin DIMM were full so i found a small collection of old SIMM RAM. I put it in thinking that it would total all of the RAM together in to one heap, but instead it just counted the SIMM slots. They turned out to be less that what i had in there origanally, so i pulled out the SIMM modules. Now it won't recognize the DIMM RAM at all. I even went out and bought a brand new stick and tryed installing it by itself, to no avail. The computer wont even turn on the BIOS screen, where it shows the processor spd and amount of RAM etc.
Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thank You

Sorry for the late responce, we've been having really bad storms lately and i haven't been able to get on. It was a standard size simm ram, ill post a picture of it for you if you want it.

Assuming your computer still works , try clearing the BIOS by using the appropriate jumper on your motherboard. If you can not find the jumper , try unplugging the tower and then removing the little silver dime sized battery on the MB for a couple of minutes then put it back in , plug in and restart. Good Luck

you might want to post that picture as there is a possibility you might have fried something as you don't put simms into dimm slots but not certain til picture is posted

ill bet you ddp he fried some buses, etc on the mobo....u cant put SIMM into DIMM slots, there not the same voltages, etc..... you probably fried some thing on your mobo, probably gonna need new mobo!!

i believe he is having the same problem i had he fried the motherboard
the only thing that will work is the fans because there is not enough power to be supplied to the cpu. i got a new motherboard and my pc worked again. so i suggest u get a new board msi maybe, i had an asus when the problem happened to me, when i checked the voltage it was too low to even run the processor only the fan ran.

but he tried simms in place of dimms, 2 totally different types of ram & physical size.

yes i no i tried the same thing with my asus motherboard and amd 2600 processor, i put simms in dimms slot. there are four thing to watch for, the psu the cpu the ram and the motherboard, in this case the motherboard is the problem, because the simms caused the mobo to lower its voltage i believe causing the board to short circuit causing only the fan to turn on and and then it will cut out after 5 minutes. u wont see the bios screen or anything u will just hear the fans running. you wont even hear the post beep test nothing just fans. so i no what is going on here cause the same occured to me.

you didn't lower the voltage as you shorted out the motherboard. it is the same as putting diesel fuel in a car gas tank that uses gas. just plain stupidity, ignorance or both. that is what the manual is for as it tells you what & what not to use.

well i was a newbe to building computer, but now i no never to try stupid things when i build a new pc, the only thing i ever do is overclocking which i never had a fail. but yea i was a beginner back then. so yea i am sure i no wat i'm talkin about, the moboard got fried, i made a mistake about the voltage lowering on the board i meant to say that the sd ram caused the the mobo to short circuit, i believe it caused a power block between the ram cpu not supplying enough power to ethier of the components.

No comment on putting SIMMS in DIMMS slots. Yikes! It is better to ask questions before you start tinkering, because it will save you lots of bucks in the long run.

what kind of mother board do you have if it is a jumperless board oc should work perfectly with but i am not sure wat kind of processor are u using, celeron or pentium. the problem i am thinking is that it has to do with the ram and the mother board. find what is the limit for the ram, how high bandwidth does the board support, you said pc2100 worked well when you over clocked.

i am using a asrock P4V88 mother board, my cpu is an intel 2.4ghz, it has a prescott 800MHZ cpu, Dual DDR400, and the limit for the ram is 4gb, i guess 1gb for each slot, but before ddp told me that i needed pc3200, so thats the kind i got.

could be you gave a static shock to your m/b i get a few every year when people decide to up their ram
may be just your m/b or could be you killed the ram too

note some m/b's of that era had sdram AND ddr ram slots :) similar size just different amount of notches in sticks

First of all i know the difference between the types of RAM. Second of all i tried removing the battery, and it still doesn't work. I always wear a grounding strap and i keep in contact with the case and try to keep grounded somehow. the mobo is like 10 yrs old so i probably was about time for it to go. And no it won't even load into BIOS.

if the board is about 10yrs old than it doesn't use 184pin dimms but 30pin or maybe 72pin simms.

engage 16- your motherboard is fried, the battery wont do nothing to change the problem. you need a new board. the problem is that while you were trying to install the ram, it caused a voltage shortage, so when ever you power up ure system all you hear is the fans running. you have a voltage block on the board, between the psu, the ram and the cpu, there is nothing you can do about it. you need a new board, if you are lucky the voltage shortage didnt damage ure cpu or ram, be cause the ram you were trying to install can also lead to your other components short circuiting. but as you said you were grounded, so you are safe. but u need a new board.

well as i said before, it is the mother board. i tried the psu but it didnt do anything when i put in a 400 wat psu, just the fans worked. as i said before, the ram caused a voltage block on the motherboard, no matter how much voltage the psu supply to the board, the board doesnt get enough power to feed to the ram and cpu.

ok, well ever since i got the graphics card to run normally, i tried to over clock it to 2.88ghz and everything botted up fine, but as soon as i tried going into my game the introduction to it which plays a short movie froze on me there. so later on when i get home i'll try switching the ram to different slots.
