Loss of sharpness always to be expected?

Hi all,

Is a certain loss of sharpness always to be expected? I played the same clip in 2 players at once - one from a TMPGENC created MPG file and one
from original camcorder. When I hooked the PC to the TV, there was a
difference apparent. I use Leadtek Winfast TV2000XP card.

Question: for under $100, is this to be expected? Any card out there
that runs <$100 that would be sharper in capturing stuff?

There is allways going to be some Quality and detail Loss when transfering analogue Video to Digital....How much Loss depends on your Capture device and the Format you are Captureing to and the Quality of the original VHS tape......

To get the Best Quality captures you would need to get a Better Capture device...Some of the Better Hardware Encoder devices have built in filters that help you Reatin more of the Original Quality....
I hear the "Hauppague PVR 150/250/350($100 -$300)" devices are Pretty Good but for VHS transfers a Device like the "Canopus ADVC-100" is Ideal because it has a Built in TBC which makes Playback Much smoother and Increases the Quality and it also has a Audio Lock feature so there is never any Chance of any sync Problems ,these devices Cost about $250......

In the old days, there was something called a video booster. It amplified the video image before you recorded it. I would expect the better capture cards to amplify the signal since both the problem and solution are well known.
