My Dell Dimension 4500 desktop computer recently stopped recognizing when I have a disk in the DVD burner. I am running Windows XP (w/SP2) and have an external Pacific Digital (Toshiba SD-R5372) DVD burner. It was working fine (burning DVDs) for several months (I'm using Clone DVD2 with SlySoft/AnyDVD). All of a sudden, no matter which USB port I plug it into, the computer recognizes that the device is there, but says "please insert a disk", even if I have a disk already inserted (I've tried inserting a blank DVD+R, a blank DVD+/-RW, a program disc, and a movie DVD, but it still fails to recognize that I have a disk there.) When I click on the drive, and "properties", it says that the device is working properly. It also is "enabled".

I tried to get an updated driver and firmware from the Toshiba website, but nothing newer than what I have is available. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software that came with the DVD burner. Nothing seems to work. I fel as though some setting somewhere must have gotten changed or corrupted that is preventing the computer from recognizing that a disk is, in fact, IN the DVD burner.

Any thoughts on possible causes/solutions would be greatly appreciated!

I've seen this happen to several people. Try disabling AnyDVD and see what happens.
Good Luck,
HW.

This also happened to me with my Dell 8400. One DVD played fine, the next it would not recognize, nor any other from that point on. I knew it had to be a hardware issue. The drive needed to be replaced. After struggling thru 3 hrs of incompetent Dell tech support, they wanted to do more research and call me back about the problem. I lost it at that point, told them "no way", just send out a tech with a new drive. Dell's warranty is good, but oh, what they make you go thru to use it! Anyway, two days later a tech came and in literally 2 minutes a new drive was in and everything is working fine again. By the way, I've only had this computer less than a year and already have had to have a sound card replaced and now the DVD-Rom drive. Dell's prices are coming down but apparently so is their quality!
