This never happened before. Usually when I put a dvd in the DVD recorder the little light turns on until the blank disc is read and then turns off. Recently, when I put a DVD into the burner, the light remains on and the burner tries to read the disc. On DVD Identifier a message tells me that the disc won't be read. I tried 5 brands of DVDs (some worked but still wouldn't burn). I also tried computer software and commercial DVDs, but none will read. Since the burner is external I will try to see if discs can be recognized on another computer as soon as I can. I believe that I have the latest firmware and driver update, and my burner is a TOSHIBA CD/DVDW SD-R5372.

Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

Try unistalling the drive in device manager then reboot and let windows recognize and reinstall it.

Well then, it is possible that your dvd writer is dead.

I got a new burner. It's the same one, but an upgraded version. My computer won't recognize it as a drive. Any suggestions?

I think you've got some hardware issue there. In addition, check to make sure your dvd burner is on Master and your dvd-rom (if you have one) is on Slave on the back of the jumper cable.

When I uninstall and reinstall the driver it says "Found new hardware. A problem occurred during hardware installation. Your new hardware might not work properly."

It seems as if I need to update the software from this site but none of the links (including the required update) will not work for me. Does this work for anyone else, or is there another way to get these updates?

I'm having the same problem. I burned three or four DVD+R (Philips 1-8x) with no problems. Now DVD Shrink says the disc is too small and Windows won't even admit there's a blank disk in the drive.
I'm using an NEC DVD_RW 3540A under WinXP SP2 and 512 MB RAM and an Athlon64 3000+.

Use dvd identifier and tell us the manufacturer and ID of those phillips discs. http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ Phillips likes to use cmc mag media and that could be the problem. Cmc mags are crapola.

Works on my old computer. I guess my issue was just a bad burner.
