After searching for a while, I ran across the program DVD Decrypter (3.5.4.0) many people seem to like. After an initial conversion to ISO and burn using its ISO writing feature, I ended up with video that looked very distorted and blocky with random strips of other images, but it appeared intentional. I'm guessing this is CSS or some other protection that messes up the video (and some audio too). By the way, this is a 2004 dvd, and only produced around a 2.6gb ISO.

I didn't give up yet though; I ran across advice for tweaking DVDD's options to have a more aggressive approach to copy protection removal, and produced a second coaster. My next move was to get AnyDVD and CloneDVD2, both at their latest versions, and clonedvd2 just gives me the error "E:/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB: read error, The operation completed sucessfully. If reading the media has failed, please clean the surface and try again." This seemed odd after DVDD was able to make an ISO without trouble (though a distorted one). After that I gave new ASPI drivers a try (adaptec 471a2), and also adding in the program smartripper, which absolutely did not work, giving me error messages at startup.

Have I overlooked something? Missed some crucial writeup to solve this? Plain run out of luck? I get the feeling it is not my hardware since DVDD made an iso, which suffered from some kind of copy protection scrambling/distortion. I've got both a mystery brand dvd+/-rom, and a Sony DVD+/-RW DRU-510A. -Please help.

Is this an original DVD Disk, or a copy? What brand of media are you using? Is the firmware on your burner up to date? Have you viewed your ripped file on your computer and did it play okay, is it just the burned disk that shows the distortion? Is the file in PAL format and not NTSC, because PAL will not play on American players? Also your original disk just might be bad, does it play on your standalone player?

To answer your questions:
My source dvd is an original dvd but, for future reference, is making a copy of a copy (if the movie was not compressed, less than 4.6gb) prone to distortion or other issues?

I'm using Fujifilm 8x media, though this doesn't seem to be the issue as you will see in a different part of my answers.

My burner firmware is up to date, and I used a recommended ASPI as well.

I have viewed the dvd iso that DVDD produced using alcohol120 and the same distortion happens, proof that my media and burner are not the issue.

I'm positive this is a region 1 NTSC dvd.

The original DVD plays flawlessly on my Pioneer DV-C503.

How does the copy play on a standalone player? Also, what media player are you using? When I play anything with Nero Showtime, I get a green screen split in two with a line vertically down the middle, however there is video in each screen.

If you still have the original, copy from the original.

@PissBacon,

Out of curiosity, what is the name of the dvd movie that you're trying to back up (you did mentioned that it's from 2004 with only 2.6gb)? If I understand this correctly, you said you did managed to ripped the movie as in ISO file and then back it up successfully, but end up with a distorted, blocky or choppy of images right? May I asked, what is the speed you're backing up when you performed the process?

This may sounds irrelevant in regards to your question in certain degree, but according to my understanding, once you've successfully ripped the original movie into your hard drive already then it shouldn't be that complicated to back it up. Meaning, you've successfully bypass/cracked all the CSS and encrypted protections that was originally put on the dvd already -- this should be able to back up easily, unless the speeds of your burning is too fast. Thus, this will sometimes gives you distorted images/pictures regardless of what medias you're using to do your back up. In addition, multitasking i.e. surfing the net, having more than 1 - 2 programs running while backing up is not recommended, plus if your CPU is low on memory, then it can trigger and causes your back up to have some distortion images sometimes. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, and please feel free to "educate" me anytime.

Again, if by chance can you post the Manufacture ID CODE? Is your Fuji 8X a DVD-R or DVD+R "Made In Japan" by any chance? I've had used the FUJI 8X DVD+R "Made In Japan" mainly for doing my dvd movies back up and so far they all burned and still plays flawlessly.
