Problems Burning Copies Of DVDs Recorded From Philips DVDR75

Hi. I just recently got a Philips DVDR75 recorder and have been in the process of transfering some family home movies over to dvd from VHS. Last night I went to make a copy of one of the dvds I had recorded using the Philips DVDR75 recorder, using my computer. After I got the video ripped to my drive and I started to burn it using the software it said the "css not supported when reading from disk". Would anyone happen to know how I can make a copy of this dvd using software on my computer? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

... You'd think that Philips would build a good DVD recorder ... I've heard a lot more bad than good about 'em though ... I have two LiteOn LVW-5005 recorders and I have very few complaints ... I also have a Philips DVP642 (player) that plays everything (sometimes) I would not recommend it on a bet ...
... The DigitalFAQ site rates the Phillips recorders "Not Suggested" ...

Yeah, I highly suggest something other than Philips. I guess I'm on the search for something different now. Pioneer seems pretty good. Anything I've bought from that name brand has always been good. Thanks for the help and information

... Yes (see comment below) .. I can also defeat macrovision (from VHS tapes and DVDs, both) simply by starting the recorder, letting it run for 10 seconds or so, then starting the source video ...

... I'm not sure exactly what you mean by 'to and from your PC' .. You cannot connect the two ... I transfer discs back and forth ...
.. The LVW-5005 will also let you record video on +R/RW, -R/RW and record SVCD and VCD formats to CD-R discs ..

Oh, sorry. What I meant by "burn discs to and from" the pc is, once I have recorded a dvd from say the LiteOn LVW-5005 it will let me rip the finished dvd to my computer and then burn again by using one of the dvd programs on my pc? That's the only complaint I have about the Philips DVDR75 recorder, is it won't let me do that. Sorry for the confusion

... I routinely record Tv programs with my LVW-5005 onto DVD+RW discs, read them to my PC, edit them with DVD Shrink (in reauthor mode) then burn them onto a DVD+R disc ... Works like a charm!..

Hi again. I thought I would bring everyone up to date about the Philips DVDR75 recorder. Last night I got to thinking that a disk wouldn't be able to be copied to a computer and burnt to another dvd if it wasn't finalized. So I went to Wal-Mart and got some dvd+r discs, I had been using dvd+rw and the Philips DVDR75 won't finalize +rw media. So anyhow, I came home and put a dvd+r in the recorder and recorded an hour on it. I then finalized it, put it in my computer ripped it using DVD Decrypter to my hd. Then I used ISO2Folder to make an iso image out of it. Then I burnt it using DVD Decrypter again in iso write mode and it worked great! So I am now convinced that you can not copy +rw or -rw media to your pc that has been recorded on this particular recorder. You need to have a finalized disc (dvd+r) in order to do this. I hope this helps others out there that might be in the same boat I was in.

... That's odd that you can't use an unfinalized +RW .. +RW discs cannort be finalized in any recorder, not just the Phillips ... I use 'em all the time unfinalized ... Also, if you read to your harddrive in iso mode, you don't need to use Folder2Iso ... just go straight to iso write mode ...

It might be my computer then, it's pretty new still though, so I'm not sure what's going on. I'm just glad it works =). Thanks for the information about not having to use ISO2Folder. That will most definately save some time

Matt,
DVD+RWs don't require finalization.
I have NEVER had a problem copying a DVD+RW made on my Philips 75, 77, Magnavox 640 or 660 on my computer. I use Nero and use the "Copy Entire Disc" option, entering from Nero Express. You can get a 30day free trial by downloading from the Nero site.

Thanks for the information Jim. Here is how I was trying to rip the DVD+RW videos to my hd. This is with DVD Decrypter. I selected "ISO Read" under Mode and then "File" from under Mode after that I selected "All" from under Edit. It wouldn't rip it like that the other day. However, I just tried ripping one of the DVD+RW discs again using DVD Decrypter and this time I selected "ISO Read" and none of the other selections and it ripped it with no problems. I'm thinking maybe my computer was just being stubborn the other day, or I selected other options on DVD Decrypter that I shouldn't have. It seems like all media is now good to rip. I'm gonna go ahead and burn the iso image now using DVD Decrypter and see how it turns out. If anyone has any suggestions on any of this, I'm always happy to have input about it. Thanks everyone

Hi Matt,
I have the phillips unit. I have ripped many +RW and +R with no problems using ISO read & write mode with DVD Decryter except when I get clever and start re-authoring to remove the adverts and 1/2 hour news breaks between movies. This created a few problems to begin with and DVD Shrink (if you use it) has problems with more than one title on a disc recorded in this way.
I used another program to do this (TMPEng) which allows you to open each chapter and delete any crap you don't want. This is useful when you record on timer and when there are news breaks recorded as well.
If you want you can get rid of the phillips menu screen as well.
Now you have mastered ripping to HDD. Go to the next level and re-author as well. Its not that hard any only takes maybe 1/2 hour of your time once you're used to it.

Thanks Byngo. I will most definately look into that. I have TMPGEnc dvd author so I'll check it out. I tried using it before but it looked to complicated then. But, as you said, I'm sure it will be easy once I figure it out. Thanks again for the help friend

You know the trouble is, since purchasing a digital surround sound system some months ago I do most of my work through the P.C alone now since everything recorded on the stand alone only has stereo audio, but then again, sticking some camcorder stuff or old VHS onto DVD is much more straight forward on the stand alone than the P.C.
I guess they both have their roles to play.

I use TMPGEnc (its the freeware one). You will find that you may start by cutting out an advert sequence at a particular point and the program asks you to select the start & end points for the "cut". Then you "re-author" and it removes that cut. Then you need to do the next cut on the new file you just created and so on. In other words you cant work through your recording choosing cut points and expect the program to remove them all in one go. What I do is to go through making a note of the chapters that need editing on paper. Then do it for real skipping to each one on your list until you have finished. It sounds long winded but it isn't once you get into it and the P.C only takes a few minutes to re-author each cut.
I am after TMPGEnc DVD author though so that I can add my own functional menus which I think is particularly useful when I rip & burn two kids movies on one disc & the missus can't figure out the title & chapter option buttons on the remote.

If you are trying to copy a DVD made from your standalone to another DVD using your PC, all you need to do is drag the VIDEO_TS folder over from the original to your hard drive and burn to a DVD. There is no CSS encryption on it at all. That costs $$$ - like $30K for a license.

Don't forget you may find it easier to edit out adverts on the recorder itself. You can then select the "make edits compatible" feature. this means other players recognise the edits as well. In this case, if I read the info of the files on the P.C using shrink it tells me thee are two files. The edited one is usually about 10 or 15 mins shorter than the other. Then if you want to get rid of the philips menu you can re-author with shrink which, although there is no need to shrink the file, it will remove the menu. Just recently I have been doing this but then adding my own menu using TMPGEnc DVD Author (not free) especially when adding two titles to one disc using DVD Shrink. Also if you made the original recording on a RW you can ditch it once on your HDD.
