I am posting here because I believe nero to be the problem? I use shrink,dvd43,and nero 5.5 to make back-ups of my dvds and have always had no problem. I recently had some of dvd collection stolen so I was making back-ups of my burnt discs with nero and the new back-ups wouldn't work.Either it played to a certin point, only played one scene from the special features, or didn't play at all. Some of the back-ups were fine but those were only the ones that I backed-up a month ago and before. Out of curiosity,I tried to back-up one of the ones that turned out fine and the errors were back. Now about a month ago I bought an ex.i/o magic dvd dual-layer 16xrw
and it came with nero 6.It was to replace my 2.4x backpack rw that always worked fine but was slow. After installing everything I kept getting diffrent errors and wasting discs,so I took back yhe i/o magic and went back to everything I had before. I also restored my system back before the time of the new hard/software. What could the problem be?

Your problem could possibly be related to the type blank media you used for your first backup. What brand media did you use. I'm hoping it wasn't Memorex because the problems you listed kind of lean towards those that Memorex media causes.

I am using compusa +r 4x,but I've used many diffrent media and never had a problem. Basicly, before the hard/software change I could make a back-up from a back-up,but now I can make 1 perfect back-up and then I get the errors after that. The back-ups I made before the change are being backed-up as if they were the original, but I experimented and tried to make another and it failed. It's like there is something in Nero that is not allowing a back up to be copied. When I installed the new rw software I had to go to a web site and download an auto firmware update program. I don't know if this has glitched my system, it was recommended on the i/o magic box and instructions. Anyone have a clue?

I think it's your media also. CompuUsa is not known as a quality brand or to use quality manufacturers. Poor quality discs can sometimes be backed up some times not. Depends on how bad they have degraded. Even from the same pack they can vary in quality. I recopied a movie on crap media done over 1 year ago that was fine but tried another burned after that from the same pack and it's a no go. So there's no consistency.
Nero will allow you to copy a copy. Once the protections removed it's just a straight copy to copy. What error is Nero giving you? What other media have you used?
A good way to see who the manufacturer is is thru Nero Tool Kit or with this prog
http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/
On those discs you can't copy check the manufacturer. There's plenty of info on aD of the good ones and bad ones.

time for my proverbial request i think....

post LAST section of your Nero log, which is in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log, but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar

I recommend you "not" to buy any Compusa medias regardless if it's DVD-R or DVD+R. If you want to go the easy way around then go to your local Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target, etc. and grab some Verbatim 8X DVD+R "MCC003", Fuji and Sony 8X DVD+R "Made In Japan", and MAXELL 8X DVD+R "Made In Japan" only. These are one of the best and perhaps top notch medias in the market you'll ever find.

In regards to Nero, I recommend you to uninstall everything from your computer first. Go here http://ww2.nero.com/enu/Clean_Tools.html - and get the "general" clean tool. On the other hand, if you have any "InCD" that was installed with Nero when you first installed it, then get the "InCD clean tool" as well. Download it, save it on a folder, run it to clean every bit and piece of Nero and InCD out from your system. Additionally, if you happened to have "ROXIO" on your computer, then I suggest you "ditch" that program as well. Reboot your computer, then reinstall Nero 6.6.0.16 (Ultra Edition) only back on your computer. Reboot it again. Now try to do your back up again with some high grade quality medias.

HI all,
My problem is making a copy of a copy.My rewriter is a sonydvd rw u14a i.0c 4 speed . using pinnacle instant copy to copy dvd to dvd.(the copy I am trying to copy is an 8 speed disc) insert disc.-pinnacle reads disc-ejects disc after reading and prompts "insert blank"- blank inserted- after 30 secs get an error message "an error occured while writing track 1 at position 2236 extended information #device:sonydvdrwu14a(d) medium error:power calibration error
f1 00 03 ff fd 00 00 12 00 00 00 00 73 03 2a 00 00 00 08 bc 00 00 1a 00"
Now ,this only happens whenI try to copy an 8 speed COPY. I am able to copy a purchased movie onto a 4 speed or an 8 speed blank perfectly.
Does any body know why this is happening,'cos it's giving me a bad head!
(The same thing happens when I try it in DVD Decrypter.)Thanks for any help.

@COLSKI -

for a start your burner's firmware is out of date, version 2.0e is here - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1618

what blank discs are you using ?

as to the copy of the copy, download dvdinfopro (free from www.dvdinfopro.com) put one of the blank discs thru it's media info check and paste results here...

i myself backup from a backup by simply copy/pasting in windows explorer then using Nero Burnuing Rom to burn to a new disc..

Any burning program that has a DISC COPY feature should be able to re-copy a copy. However as we are trying to explain above, the brand of blank media used may come into play. Any brand media manufactured by CMC MAG is usually very poor quality blank media. If you are lucky enough to get one of these blanks to burn the first copy, you will find that usually in 6 months or less they will start to have playback problems and when trying to re-copy that first burn it will usually error out. Expect a 50% failure rate with those blanks. This is why we keep asking about the brand of blank media being used.

Where would the serial # in the log file be? I don't see any 1a21, but is it the big 24 didgit # at the beginning?

Yes that should be the serial # from Nero - they're 24 digits.

Ok, I'm not an expert on Nero logs but here are a few things I noticed. It looks like you are trying to copy on the fly without writing to your HD first. Not the best way to get a good copy. Too many chances of both read and write errors. Next if I read right, it looks like you are trying to copy VCD cd movies to DVD. If this is correct then those VCD's need processed properly to copy to a dvd. Last it also shows a medium error which goes back to the possiblity of poor choice of blank media. Like I said I'm no Nero expert but thats what it looks like to me. I may be wrong.

To add to Jerry746 - you need to update your firmware - here's a link:
http://support.necsam.com/oem/downloads/flashfirmware/
I also can't see where Nero recognizes the media your using. The firmware update may help this.
This also looks like a log from a burn that was completed.

Maybe something for another day to wring a bit more life out of that burner - http://herrie.org/upgrdr.html - Basically you could upgrade your drive very slightly, by changing it into an NEC 1300A. This would allow you to burn to -R discs, but only at 4.0x for DVD-R and 2.0x for DVD-RW discs.

But as your drive stands, it is only presently capable of burning to 4.0x DVD+R and 2.4x DVD+RW discs, what media are you using (and what speed are the discs rated at ?...

Reguarding the nero gen. cleaning tool, it said that plugins will be deleated, willthat effect me or not? if so, where do I look and what do I do? Should I do this prior to the firmwear update or does it matter? I plan to re-install nero5.5?The burner is a usb connected backpack and the Aspi is a system default. Should I use the one by nero found in the nerotool section? As of now it says aspi not installed.

Actually I have not. I have had luck using the the burn video files instead of the copy entire disc, but I also get a cache too small message but it burned fine.If I try to use shrink or Icopydvd2 software to burn the burned copy and I get a F file not found error and I don't know what that means.I just don't understand why everything has worked for years and all of a sudden not.Again, I can make a perfect backup but copy entire disc using Nero the new backup plays some of the movie bue then freezes. The select a scene works up to the freeze point, but if you select a scene after the freeze point the menue just freezes.
