I have read through the forums, but can't quite close the gap on my knowledge about recorders. Here is where I need help...

I have a DirecTivo that I will to dump some programs to DVD every once in awhile. I want a DVD recorder that can do +R & -R, play a wide variety of formats including VCD/SVCD.

My first attempt...LiteOn 5005 from Costco. In the 2 weeks I had this I mainly used it as a player and for some reason, the audio cut out on me between chapters on some disks. I even upgraded to the latest "release" firmware. I didn't do much recording with it. Only a couple of tests that seemed to work fine. I took this unit back to Costco because of the playing issues.

My second attempt...While returning the first unit at Costco, I picked up a GoVideo VR3845 DVDR/VCR combo. Not thrilled about the combo, but I like GoVideo stuff. Worked like a charm, until I went to backup a Six Feet Under episode from HBO. When I hit record...BAM "Copy protected...Will not Record". WTF? So I tried this out on a variety of channels and shows on my DirecTivo. All HBOs...copy protected. MTV...copy protected. OPRAH!!!copy protected.

Can someone explain what I am seeing? Do you think I should give the 5005 another chance? Will it also give me this copy protection grief? I am willing to put hacked firmware on the unit to make this thing work like it should.

PLEASE HELP. :-)

... Try the LVW-5005 again. Both of mine work like a charm. Hint ... Sometimes you need to start recording on another channel (ABC, NBC, CBS etc...) for 10 seconds or so, then switch your box to HBO. What you're encountering is HBO's attempt to thwart piracy ...

.. Backing up a program broadcast on HBO ... that's a new one ... ROFLMAO!

I thought "backing up" was legit. ;-)

So, is what I am experiencing Macrovision, or is that only a technology coming from VHS?

Also, with the LVW-5005, will I still get the copy protection message from HBO, or do I always have to do the 10 seconds on another channel trick?

Thanks!

... I believe that if you apply the 'Macrovision hack' to the LVW-5005 that it will solve your problem ... Personally I just use the 10 second trick since I really don't feel comfortable altering my firmware unless there's a major problem being encountered ...

.. As far as 'backing up' a program on Tv ... I believe that if you pay for a signal to be delivered into your residence, you should have the right to record said signal ... 'Nuf said about that

. You may want to ask about the 'Macrovision thing' at this forum:

?? Oh, Yeah ... a good price on the LVW-5005 is here: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=17066...
