I bought a Thinkpad 390E, so then I went to start it up and it has a picture of a lock in the upper left hand corner with a screen next to it, I think it might on bios password protect,so I asked the girl who I bought it from and she does not know the password, my question is can I take both battiers out and let it sit fir a couple of weeks ,to drain any other possible battiers in the laptop, can you tell me what to do,is there any way in cracking th code? Please help me Thannks

did you get a manual for the laptop to see what lock is about? i presume you can't enter the bios at all? there is at least 2 batteries in the laptop, 1 that powers it & the 2nd that powers the cmos chip. to get at the 2nd battery, you will have to open up the laptop to get at it. check in any access panels 1st to see if the battery which is small is under 1 of the panels.

the security is with the bios not the hd. is 1 of the 2 batteries small & is it located in the laptop itself not in a bay??

if not soldered in place but can be removed than remove it. can leave out maybe a couple of minutes or leave out overnight to be certain. the cmos will go back to default settings including no password.

make certain the laptop has no power to it, disconnect that battery if you can & leave it off for the night. put the battery back in in the morning to see if password still comes up.
