I've used BT's for sometime now and was getting along fine with some fairly decent d/l speeds. In the last couple of weeks my speeds have dropped to below 1KB/s.
- I've not installed any new software.
- I've tried Azureus and BitComet - both have the same problem.
- On a friends computer the speeds from the same torrents I'm d/l are fine.
- I've tried various ports.
- I have no router.

What could put the brakes on my downloads like this?

Any ideas?

From just reading you say you've tried, have you though about or tried...
- Resetting your router
- Open ports that are advised p/the program you've switched to.
This link will give you an idea of what I mean: http://www.portforward.com/cports.htm
- Spyware, Viruses, Trojans etc could have an effect. You should conduct thorough scans for each.

Just some thoughts...

Thanks for replying but every suggestion you gave was already on my tick list.
I've Googled a few keywords and it appears as if my ISP (TalkTalk in the UK) have been responsible for a few download speeds falling flat.
Can a ISP detect that torrents are being used and restrict d/l speeds. A standard download test still gives me my 1.1 meg speed I pay for but as soon as Azureus kicks in then its back to 1KBs.

Could be your ISP is blocking the incoming connections or limiting your bandwith.

I know for sure an ISP can see your activity. For example; if you're transferring/downloading files all day and night (i.e. Torrents) they would see the activity OR at least notice it. I'm just not too sure about seeing what exactly is being transferred (I DOUBT IT). So yes, DVDBack23 is right. Ports can be blocked by ISPs for various reasons. You once had a working setup. Now you're just gonna have to test various ports to see what works for you.

Hey,I've been trying to download Maximo Park on Azureus. It's gone all very well up until now where it wont go no more at 60.6% and there are not any seeds connected. They are only in the swarm which i still thought i would get speed of but havnt except i have only had people uploading of me and those other users on the details tab have reached 60.6% so i cant get the full file and i dont get much help when updating the tracker because i only found more peers that want to connect and they once they reach the speed im at its all a standstill. Any advice on what i can do apart from hope a user will be on with the same download. Thanks

@jazzyt
That probably means that there are few or no other seeders out there with the complete file you are trying to get. You will probably continue to be at a standstill until seeders upload what the rest of you are missing.

I'm the same as you. Regular downloads are fine but torrents just suck at the moment. I'm seriously thinking of dumping them as my ISP.

I saw in one forum about TalkTalk 'shaping' your bandwith so you can't download torrents. What this means I have no idea.

just found this connolly, dunno what it means could anyone on here clear it up. I personally think think talktalk is saying £27 per month and download waht you want just as long as its not to much.

7. What are P2P ports?
Peer-to-Peer (P2P) ports are used by file sharing system such as KaZaA, Morpheus, Grokster, Gnutella, LimeWire, WinMX, or eDonkey2000 to download large amounts of data.
A small number of heavy P2P users can utilise a significant proportion of available bandwidth. This can result in a significantly degraded quality of service for other users.

9.1 Does TalkTalk allow P2P downloading?

TalkTalk allows the use of P2P software, however, it does not condone its use where subsequent file sharing breaches applicable local laws and regulations. This includes, but is not limited to, those principles of law which protect against compromise of copyrights, trade secrets, proprietary information and other intellectual property rights, libel or defamation of character, invasion of privacy, tortuous interference.

9.2 Does TalkTalk block P2P ports?

No, TalkTalk broadband does not block ports used by P2P file sharing systems.

9.3 Does TalkTalk broadband prioritise traffic generated by P2P software?

TalkTalk broadband may use network controls to prioritise traffic generated by web browsing, email and music downloads over that generated by with P2P file sharing systems where it is found that it affects the bandwidth of other broadband users.

9.4 Why does TalkTalk put network controls in place with P2P networks?

TalkTalk owes a duty to all our Broadband users to both preserve network integrity and avoid network degradation. If, in our reasonable opinion, we believe P2P usage has, or may adversely affect, such network integrity or may cause network degradation for the majority of users we may control the transmission speed of selected ports.

9.5 Does TalkTalk use network controls to affect gaming or other legitimate download services?

The techniques used to control the network should not affect legitimate download, chat, instant messaging or gaming services.

so if they control certain ports is there a way around it?????

please before i get drunk and hurl a load of abuse at the lovely talktalk telephone girl who couldent tell her hard drive from her elbow

Good work spliffman - It looks like you've found the problem.

I've used BitComet which randomly selects a port and I still have the same slowdown, so I don't think just changing ports is going to be a way around this.

These network controls they speak about sound well dodgy. I pay for a service that I'm not getting. I want to be the one to decide how I use my broadband, not them. Bunch of tossers the lot of 'em.

You might want to switch to a download client like Bit Tornado. Just open and/or forward the ports needed and you're good to go. If you need help with Opening Ports (if you're using a router) there is a tutorial link under my sig.
