I have a LG gsa 4120b... latly i noticed that when i insert a disc it seems to take a long time for the drive to recognize it. so im wondering what kind of test i can performe to see if the drive is ok or not.

Why don't you clean the laser lens ... Pull the cover off and, using a Q-tip and the highest % iso alcohol you can find, carefully/gently clean the lens ... Quite possibly this will help ...
