DMRE85H HDD Sleep problem

Hi,I have owned a Pana DMRE85H for about 16 months. Recently it has developed a problem when the HDD goes into sleep mode. Previously, pressing the HDD button on the remote would re-activate the HDD ready for use. Now, when I press the HDD button, the machine switches off and then re-starts - going through the full "self check" function. When recording a DVD-R or RAM, the recorder stops recording about the same time the HDD goes into sleep mode. Panasonic UK are no help and they tell me this is normal. I do not agree as the machine did not do this for the first 14 months of its life. Can anybody please help. PS I have tried the Skip Rev/Time Slip/Open Close reset method but the problem remains.
