I have backed up about 10 of my movies using DVD Decrypter and they all play fine. Yesterday I backed up Vanilla Sky and for some reason that disc plays with an aspect ratio of 4:3 in my DVD player, but it plays fine at 16:9 in my computer. When I put any other of my backups in the DVD player, they play correctly at 16:9, so I don't think the problem is a setting with the DVD player.
Any ideas?
Thanks

are you sure it is playing in 16:9 on your computer and not 4:3. If it is playing 4:3 on your TV then the DVD is 4:3 format.
Some DVDs have both formats 1 on each side. Check and see if that is the case and rip the 16:9 format side.
I highly dought that it plays 16:9 on the computer and only 4:3 on your TV. More then likly you are just thinking its playing 16:9 on your computer.

It is DEFINITELY playing in 16:9 on my computer, and 4:3 on my
DVD player.

I just checked all regions listed in IMDb and no full screen DVD of Vanilla Sky was ever released plus I checked my region 1 original of VS and there is no choice provided for wide or full: wide only. Maybe someone in your house set your DVD player to project or your TV to receive only a 4:3 signal. A player's settings choices will usually be:
4:3 on a square TV
4:3 on a Widescreen TV
16:9 on a square TV
16:9 on a Widescreen TV.
Your TV may also have settings to check.
Can't think what else it could be ... other than you might have a poltergeist problem.

you have tried playing other 16:9 on your DVD and they play alright. I duno what would be doing this. But I know the DVD cant just change by itself its either in 16:9 format or 4:3 not both unless both formats are on the same side of the DVD

I never backed it up lol
but commen sense would be you either have widescreen or full screen format on the backup it wont switch to 1 or the other. The only way would be what you said he has the TV or DVD set to always play at 4:3 ratio or if both formats was on the same side disc like some movies do and he was choosing the fullscreen version. Which you said they never made a copy of it in 4:3

I've tried the disc on another DVD player and TV, and it plays 4:3 there too, so that seems to rule out player and TV settings as the problem.
As far as distortion, the image is distorted on the TV's. It is stretched vertically, (ie circles appear taller than wide).
I've backed up two more movies now, Bruce Almighty and Closer, and both of them exhibit the same problem. So I am guessing something has changed in my backup softwares, since all my earlier backups were fine (and still play fine in the DVD player). I am guessing it is DVD Decrypter, so I am going to try uninstalling and reinstalling it.

So, the backup stage HAS to be the problem then. But a bit drastic to unistall/reinstall. Look everywhere for settings that have been changed in both your backup and decrypting softwares or revert to the software's default settings if there is such a button to click.
Name the programs IYP.

What is your computer monitor resolution? If it is set at a high rate, it will appear as if it is playing at 16:9.

Uninstalling/reinstalling DVD Decrypter seems to have cured the problem.
Thanks for your help.
