HI:

I am confused about how to hook up HDMI. I will be getting a Sammy hlr6168w DLP TV with (2) HDMI inputs. Also a Directv Receiver with an HDMI output. Now if you just hook the cable from the input of the sammy to the output of the satellite receiver then you will only get sound coming from the TV's speakers.

My question is how do you get 5.1 sound (I have a Yammy rx-v1400) from the Yammy into the mix here??? The HDMI cable carries both sound and video. Regards...

the HDMI sould only carry a video signal only, no audio through that cable.. you can use an optical cable or coax thru a receiver for sound, unless that tv has an optical or coax in the back. my setup is a 57" Hitachi 57TWX20B, with the LGDVB418 dvd player, and i am usning an HDMI from the dvd player to a DVI connection in the back of my tv, no sound travels through it, so i use rca cables from the dvd to tv, so we can watch tv and hear when not using the stereo, and an optical when we do turn on the stereo.

hi:

Thanks for your input. I really dont want to disagree with you but from I "read" HDMI is for both audio and video. Here is a typical google search on HDMI and I quote, "HDMI supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable."

Since I dont have hands on I cant test anything yet. Can anyone else answer this question. Thanks. Regards...

hi:

I read that article (fast) and didnt get any insight about HDMI except for cable length.

Here is the definition taken off the web,

"HDMI assures that the best video signal is always sent from source (e.g., HDTV signal) to the display (e.g., plasma television). It does this by allowing uncompressed video and multi-channel audio data to be input to the display device through one single cable. The need for multiple analog connections for high-resolution audio and video are eliminated. Without a HDMI connection one would need 3 video connections for high definition video and 6 audio connections for high-resolution audio.:

again, that may be the differential on my cable versus your cable... mine being an HDMI to DVI and not HDMI to HDMI.
hope you accomplish your goal with your setup.

yes no doubt about it. DVI doesnt carry the sound. Since I dont have the TV or HDMI cable as of yet I am in the dark about this. Hope someone sheds some light. Regards...

@PennRon, HDMI is the next step beyond DVI. DVI carries the uncompressed video signal from one source to another. HDMI came along and could do that AND carry the audio (from sources such as DVD AUDIO and SACD...Super Audio CD...both a 5.1 Discrete music sound.) I have actually 20 SACDS and 15 DVD AUDIOs. I do not have HDMI on the DVD player, but the normal 5.1 multi channel output...that connects to the 5.1 channel input of the Yamaha Receiver. HDMI is now on several high end receivers (Yamaha, Denon, Harmon Kardon, Marantz, Onkyo, and even some Pioneers) That way they can carry the 5.1 from DVD Video to The Receiver that in returns disperses it to the dedicated channels in a sound system (5.1, 6.1, 7.1, and in Denon case 10:2). For now you will still need to hook up a didgital coaxial or optical cable to receive the 5.1, 6.1 Discrete Sound from movies.
Hope this helps

@ PennRon,

Just to itterate, HDMI can hadle video resolutions from 480i (standard) to 1080p (high Def max.), any lossy audio format (Mp3, WMA, AC3, DTS, ect...), and upto 8 descrete uncompressed audio channels (7.1 sourround, for DVD-Audio, and mabye SACD in the future).

MovieDud's solution is the best way to hook up your system. Run HDMI from your HD Sat. box to the DLP and Optical cable from the Sat. box or the TV (out) to your receiver.

By the way, nice TV! Make sure to connect that 2nd HDMI port to an HD-DVD or Blue-Ray player!
