I try burning an audio cd for my girlfriend. here is the problem however. the burn comes up that the process is successful completed but when i try and play the cd in my drive on my computer or stereo, the disc is recognized as being blank with nothing on it...any ideas what could be the problem? let me know if anyone has any suggestions to what the problem could be. here is the history for the burn:

Are you certain that you have write checked and simulation unchecked? Also, if you continue to have errors, try writing at a slower speed or different media.

- you need to free up more memory before any burning, or your hard drive will be 'swapping'

@ creaky
i may sound like a BIG n00b with the following questions...wait...i actually am...anyways...here are a few i have for you creaky:
i was just wondering what you meant by "swapping"? and does it really make a difference how much memory i have on my comp when i burn? and why? and how can you tell i need a better media? is there any kinda of burnable cd's you would suggest in my case? thanks a bunch

Swapping is when you run out of memory and your pc uses virtual memory which is a portion of hard disc, this is bad anyway, but worse for any kind of burning from the same hard disc.

There's nothing much wrong in your logfile apart from what I highlighted, you need to try some better media, say verbatim for instance

so if i was to delete some of my bigger files i have stored on my computer and things i dont use anymore, would this help stop the computer from using the virtual memory? or is there more action that i would have to take as it pertains to that? get back to me when you have a chance. i will try doing the things you suggested and get back to you and let you know if it worked. thanks again - ur da best!

@creaky

i also forgot to ask along with my last message i sent to you the following. Ive heard people mention upgrading the firmware on the recorder from the Recorder Manufacture's web site. Do you think at all that this would help in this situation? is there any way to find out how out of date my firmware for my recorder is? and if so, do you know from the information i gave you where i could find updates for my recorder? lemme now what you think creaky...YOUR MY ONLY HOPE!!! lol - thanks - trent

Ok well i tried what you said creaky and it still isnt burning for me. NOW i am getting the infamous "write error" message. i deleted TONS of files off my computer...i have about 85% free space now on my comp. i tried a new media and it didnt work. i tried ever speed possible right from bottom to top and still nothing. the furthest its got is about 20% in and then it comes up with "write error." although i expected at least the 20% of songs to be burnt on the cd...the cd comes out BLANK still...so now am i not only still ending up with blank cd's, but also the error message. although i think if i was able to fix the write error it would burn. any ideas what i shud do now? i will attach the latest log and hopefully you can tell me if you see anything suspicious...GET TO ME ASAP!!! IM PULLING MY HAIR OUT AS WE SPEAK!!! - trent

Hard disk is where all you files are stored, memory (ram, which stands for random access memory) is something else.

Outdated firmware for your burner could well be the cause, sorry I didn't get very far finding any, as you have a generically named drive, but forgot to ask your for more info. Give me more info about the drive name and we can then know where to look for possible new firmware..

me again. i used Nero info tool and looked in there and the only thing i cud come across ( this could be completely useless but you tell me ) was under the sub heading of "drivers". Then there are three more categories under that, driver, description, and version. here is what i think it is... under driver - atapi. under description - IDE/ATAPI port Driver. and under version - 5.1.2600.2180(xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158. let me know if that has anything to do with what were after. if not...where can i find it? thanks

alright...after searching all morning and pulling my hair out many times i have finally found out what kind of drive i have. It is the 48x16x48 msi burner (MS-8348A). Now I have ran into a problem however. For some reason, i cant seem to find updated firmware for it anywhere. But i did come across this...

"If you own an MSI MS-8348A you might have noticed that the drive has some problems with media compatibility and writing quality. MSI has fixed these problems in version 150D of the firmware. Unfortunately, MSI has not made it available for download yet.

I wanted to see if there was any way around this. If you haven't figured it out already, the MS-8348A is based on the Optorite CW4802. Using the firmware and tools readily available, I was able to turn my MSI drive into the Optorite.

To turn your MSI drive into an Optorite, you'll need a few files first. The first file you need is the update.exe from the 140D firmware. You can download this here:

http://download.msi.com.tw/support/dvr_exe/8348a_140d.exe

Next, you'll need the 150E firmware for the Optorite drive. You can download it here:

http://www.optorite.com/150E.zip

You just want the 150E.bin file. NOT the update.exe.

Next, take the bin file and the update.exe from the MSI firmware and copy it to a floppy or somewhere on your hardware. You will need to boot to DOS to update it. True DOS, not a command prompt. From there, you will need to run:

update.exe 150E. bin /F

The /F forces the firmware update, no matter what the drive's ID string is. Once you run it, it will ask you what drive you want to update. Choose the MSI drive and the firmware will be update. Once you reboot, you should have an Optorite drive.

You can always go back and turn your drive into an MS-8348A again by using the MSI firmware and running:

update.exe 140D.bin /F \"

It looks like im not the only one who has problems with this damn thing, lol. So heres what i was wondering, i was wondering if anyone would be able to help me find some updated firmware for my drive? and if not, give me your thoughts on if i should try the above mentioned method? let me know guys. I NEED TO GET BURNING! lol

If you're not worried about the warranty on the drive, sounds like you've stumbled on a good workaround there if you're brave enough you could follow that suggestion..

ok heres what i did...i just want to make sure i did everything right before i try and burn again...dont need anymore "coasters" lol. i clicked on the 160D that has "new" blinking beside it from the link you sent me. it then asks me where i want to extract the files...and i can choose where...does it matter where i put them as long as i can find them? i chose my desktop so i could easily find them and clicked install. it then puts two icons on my desktop...one titled "UPDATE" and the other "v160D" i double click the "update" icon and a black box flashes on the screen and then disappears...any idea whats thats about? and then when i click on the other icon titled "v160D" it comes up saying " you are attempting to open a file of type 'BIN FILE'(.bin) These files are used by the operating system and by various programs. Editing or modifying them could damage your system." So I tried to open it and it comes up that windows cant open. so, what i was wondering was whether or not i had to put those two files in a specific location? if so, where? and what the difference is between 120D, 140D, 150D, 158D, and 160D from the link you sent me? did it matter which one i picked? let me know as soon as ya can.thanks for the continued help!

there was a readme.txt in that file you downloaded -
Quote:
Update BIOS Procedure

Step 1:
Copy aaa.BIN file to C:\>
Step2:
Copy Update.EXE file to C:\>
Step3:
Please close Windows system and reboot by Dos mode:
Step4:
Run Update aaa.BIN file

(Screen will show)
MSI CD-RW BIOS update program!!!
1. On Secondary IDE: ATAPI CD-RW 52XMax Master
0. EXIT
Please select one to update BIOS: Please choose 1
Do you want to update Ver. 130D to Ver. xxxD ¡eY!N¡f
Please choose Y
- you're gonna need 2 floppy discs from www.bootdisk.com, say a windows 98 boot disk. the 2nd floppy will need to be wiped in order to put the 2 files you mentioned onto. so you boot the pc with the 98 floppy disk, then insert the 2nd disk and run the update.exe from there...
