I tried to burn a DVD with a number of home movies using NeroVision Express 3 (I have a completely updated Nero 6.0.6.16 set of programs). However, the DVD does not play properly on my DVD-player and TV set. The video is fine, but the sound is missing. On the other hand, when the DVD is played on my computer, the sound is fine.
According to its manual, my DVD-player (Pioneer DV-444) will accept DVD Video with MPEG2 as well as VCDs, CDs and MP3 discs if the MP3 is in MPEG1 Audio Layer 3 format at 44.1 or 48kHz. I have never had problems with VCDs or MP3 discs.
When I checked the files on the DVD with AVIcodec, AVIcodec came up with this on one of the files on the DVD:
"File : 11.44 MB (21 MB), duration: 0:00:18, type: MPG, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 75 %
Video : 20 MB, 9610 Kbps, 25.0 fps, 704*576 (4:3), MPG2 = MPEG 2 (SVCD/DVD)
Audio : 492 KB, 224 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, 0x51 = Mpeg-1 audio Layer 2 [0xc0]"
The Pioneer manual mentions Audio Level 3 for MP3, but the DVD audio format turned out to be Audio Layer 2. Assuming that the audio on a DVD has to be the format mentioned for MP3 (or is that a wrong assumption?), it seems that this can explain why the DVD did not play on my Pioneer player.
In short, I think the problem is that the DVD audio produced automatically by NeroVision Express 3 is Audio Level 2 instead of Audio Level 3.
If I am right, then in order to be able to play my DVD on my player, in NeroVision Express 3 I have to set the audio format of my DVD to Audio Layer 3 instead of the Audio Layer 2 that was used automatically.
Unfortunately I cannot find anything in my Nero software which would enable me to burn a DVD with Audio Layer III instead of II.
My questions are therefore:
1) Does Nero automatically burn DVDs using Audio Layer 2 or is there something missing in my computer that would enable Audio Layer 3 to be used automatically? (This does not seem likely since I have Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec , and my MP3 discs play well.)
2) Is there an option in the Nero software, or perhaps in the registry settings, which will enable me to burn an Audio Layer 3 DVD?
3) Is there something else I have overlooked?
I am just realising that probably I could make a file for each chapter, convert it to the right format using some other software, and burn it in some way without authoring the whole DVD in NeroVision Express. However, I would very much prefer to use NeroVision Express, and make chapters, menus etc there (if only to get value for the money I paid Ahead!).
Any help would be more than welcome.
Some more info, if that is useful:
- The drive is a LG DVDRAM GSA-4163B
- The disc is DVD-R
