Hello, I searched this forum for a post like this and couldn't find one. If it is a repost, I am sorry.

Question 1. Which would be the better unit to buy the 5005 or the 5006?

Question 2. What is the difference between the two? The Liteon website doesn't give any differences that I could see.

Question 3. The reviews on this recorder are poor because of 2 reasons: poor video play back and unable to to edit recorded movies (whether recorded off tv/cable/satellite/camcorder..anything) on a PC and unable to copy the newly burnt DVD. Has anyone found this to be true? I want to I-Link my D8 camera and then edit them on the computer. This is the deciding factor on whether to buy this unit or wait until Christmas and get the Sony model instead.

Thanks

The LVW-5005 is the USofA model, the LVW-5006 is the UK model

The LVW-5005 recorders that I have will only edit in the same manner as a VCR .. 'on the fly' pausing for commercials, etc ... What I usually do is record on a rewritable disc and either use my PC to edit the disc or play it with a DVD player and re-record it, pausing when I want to eliminate sections ...

 The playback quality is good

I purchased one a year ago and liked it enough to recently buy another ...

Maybe, if you need more editing features you should buy a model with a hard drive like the LVW-5045

Thanks for replying.

I live in Canada and both modles are offered here through Costco. The difference being the 5006 is 30 more than the 5005.

You brought up the point that you edit your recordings on your PC. Do you have any trouble doing that? Here is why I am asking...
Quote:
The reason for my now extreme disappointment with the Liteon LVW-5005A DVD recorders is based on several really bad properties of this recorder.

First, most (if not all) of the DVDs written by this recorder cannot be read on a PC or edited by any of the currently available video editors that I tried. One reviewer mentioned that you could use the "VOB Blanker" software program to clean up the DVD files for editing. Sadly, this is not the case with the current LVW-5005A and its latest firmware update.

The other editors, fixups, and conversion programs all get confused by the non-standard format used by Liteon to write their DVD files. Although the files have standard names (.IFO, .VOB, etc.), they are different enough internally so that they confuse or hang up most video or DVD processing programs.

Second, the LVW-5005 may or may not record on a disc, and after a few days of this, you start to lose confidence in the device and are almost apprehensive about using it. Let me give you an example.

You set the timer to record something important and you use a DVD+RW that you have recorded on before with no errors. You record a 10 second clip with introductory info and then play it back to see if it recorded ok. Everything looks good so you turn off the unit and wait for the timer to start the recording. The timer turns the unit on at the prescribed time and it starts recording. You can see this happening on the monitor and on the LED display. So far so good. Two hours later you watch as the timer record time elapses and the unit stops recording and the unit shuts off as expected. Now turn the unit on and check on the recording just made.

Nothing is there! In fact, even the short clip you recorded previously is gone! The disc is effectively erased and you have no clue as to what happened. You look at the timer recording status screen and it shows "OK". This is most frustrating if it happens only once in a while but this happens erratically and very often.

In short, I rate the Liteon LVW-5005 DVD Recorder as NOT ACCEPTABLE and unless you have extreme patience and unlimited time to spend dealing with the idiosyncrasies of this unit, I do not recommend purchasing the LITEON LVW-5005 DVD Recorder.
This review is one person's opinion but has been reflected in a few other opinions. Since this site has a lot of people who have this product, I wanted to see what you guys have to say.

From the different posts out there it seems you must use good quality discs, so Sony is it for me.

I don't want to use this as a VCR replacement as my VCR works fine and I don't watch tv anyway...just my home shot stuff.

This is the site for the above review.

***Update***

I just checked the model LVW-5045 out and OUCH!!! Nearly $300 more (depending on retailer) for this unit (here in Canada)!! If I am going to spend over $400 for a recorder I will definitely choose the Sony first. Thanks for the link though.

The Sony recorders are overpriced and are known for drive failures .. the LiteOn LVW-5045 has a 160GB hard drive and nobody can touch it for what you can purchase it for .. ALL DVD recorders have issues .. look at the second link in my sig to see 'Fatal Flaws with DVD Recorders' I have a feeling that the person having trouble recording was using low quality DVD RW media .. the RW type discs are a poor format to begin with and low quality media only compounds this problem

As far as needing extreme patience with the LVW-5005 .. I never, in my 51 years on Planet Earth have ever been accused of having any patience at all, let alone an extreme form of it

I have found that even though the LVW-5005 will record on DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW and CD-R discs, that it really prefers the DVD+R discs ... It simply loves Verbatim +R discs and NEVER gives me any trouble with them

Quite possibly, the person who deemed the LVW-5005 'unacceptable' received a unit that probably should have had it's firmware either upgraded or maybe should have exchanged the unit for another .. DVD recorders certainly aren't as 'bulletproof' as a VCR and shouldn't be expected to be so .. DVDs are still a relatively new form of media and the home recorders haven't been around all that long .. EVERY recorder is going to have certain flaws, if you want to use one, you need to learn to live with certain imperfections ..

 http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/buyerguides/dvdrecorders/dvdr...

Last but not least .. If you search through the threads, you will find tons of complaints about every DVD recorder .. the LiteOn LVW-5005, since it seems to be one of the top sellers at this time, will most certainly have it's share .. It also has one of the best warranties in the industry .. 1 year, parts and labor .. you will not find a warranty any longer than that for no extra charge ...

? Cheers and happy hunting ?

Thank you.

As soon as the drive goes on sale Sept 19, I will get the 5005.
