First of all I am new to DVD recording, and I recently bought this recorder, and recording using DVD+R discs I have found that they do not want to play in either of my HP computers, which both have DVD burner/players in them. All DVD+ discs that I have recorded in this machine and try to play on the computers want to start out on chapter 20 or so and I have to fast forward to the end of the movie and let the movie start over. (The media players are set to repeat any videos)

Anyways, on to my question:

I thought I was getting a great deal at Office Depot and bought 2 100 disc packages of DVD discs and after getting them home, opening one of the packages and burning a disc I noticed that they were DVD-R discs

They burn and play fine in the iLo machine even though the manual says the machine will only play DVD- discs, not record on them, and in fact play fine in both computers, except that when you play the disc they seem to be in a more simple format.(only information on the first chapter is shown, the rest of the boxes to the corresponding number of 5 minute chapters are blank)

My question is can I extend the recording time on a DVD- disc like I can on a DVD+?

I have the machine set up to make a 3 hour disc, but while recording a program that had been saved on my DirecTivo the ilo recorder stopped recording at 1:58:40 using the DVD- disc.

I know that I should be using the correct disc, but I have 60 bucks worth of DVD- discs that have been opened and am hoping to be able to use them since they seem to work fine except for the time issue.

Thanks for any advice

What model # ilo do you have

I have not used - R or -R/W disks but I don't see why they can't be recorded to as the + disks.

I think you are using the term Chapter when refering to Titles.

Yes you can extend the recording time With editing.

In Three hr mode, is the program that long and if the machine stops at 1:58;40 are you using OTR and don't realise it.

Again I think that before any one can really answer. You need to state The machine model # The ilo 04 series is LiteOn and the 05 is Cyberhome. It sounds like it may be an 05.

PS
Many computer DVD drives will not accept a + disk. Check your computer manual or contact HP

The program was 2 hours and it cut off recording at 1:58:40 That is what has me thinking that the recorder is for some reason still looking at the disc as a 2 hour disc even though I have the settings at 3 hour. What is OTR and is that another setting that would help extend the recording time?

Thanks!

I dont have the ILO 05 I have a ilo DVDRHD04 which is a different animal.

For info
There are two versions of the 05. A ZU and a MU.The ZU is what most WalMart stores carry at this time. The MU is considered the more versatile and is basicly the same as the Cyberhome 1600MU.I would think that you have a DVDR05ZU.

OTR is one touch recording. First press of the record button gives access to the media full capacity. second press gives 30 min. Each additional press increases by 30 min.
The OTR will not extend the recording time in any recording mode as it only adds or subtracts the time within a mode. Selecting SP,LP EP etc will.
I don't think your 05 has that but I'm not sure. I looked at the manual and found no refference to it.
When you say extend the recording. I eas refering to your notation that some recording are 1:55:40 With a Title thumbnail and freespace one. This can be edited with a blank recording at the end with merge, to fill the recording media leaving only one thumbnail.
You may have answered your problem, the disk only going to 1:58:40 but the recording media should go the full 2 hr. It may be the use of - disks the manual calls for + disks. Some users have reported there machine can use both. Other report the - disks will not work

I'm sorry for not seeing that you have the 05. I don't believe I can speak on all featrues the 05 may have,or its limitations.
The sites I gave are excellent. This site has threads on the 05. I would check them all. I should think that when this weekend is over someone may have an answer.
