ram or processor causing slow pc when surfing web

Hi,
I have just upgraded to a broadband connection. I am very satisfied with the speed but i have become frastrated.
As data comes though the pc behaves very erratic. The mouse pointer becomes jerkky and the pc runs to a crawl. This is worse on web pages with high data levels ie. pictures or moving images. But once the web page has fully loaded everything is running back to how it was.
Downloads which have 10 seconds remaining could take as long as 2 minutes.
After a few hours surfing I even notice the clock on the pc is behind by as much as 20mins. Its only when I turn off totaly and re-start my pc that the clock returns to normal and I am able to surf as normal - initally anyway.
So, what I am thinking is that my pc can't handle so much data coming through so fast because it was fine with a dial up connection.
I only have 128mb ram with P3 667mhz processor.
Will upgrading by another 128mb ram solve this problem or is it my processor?
Also, does anyone know of a freeware utility which i could use as a sort of, bandwitdth limiter, as a stopgap solution?

if running xp, the more ram the better as you are probably using the hd as virtual ram. how much space free on your hd??

sounds like a modem problem.there should be a reset on the modem.turn off the pc.hold the button in for about 30 secounds.then restart your comp make sure you change the connection in your internet options in your control panel to broadband also when you go into lan settings you have to make sure the bypass proxy server is check.you will find all this in your control panel[win] under internet options then go to connections youll see the lan and connections there.hope this helps you

I am using win 98se with about 3gig free space on HD. I have re installed the modem but I am sure it isn't the modem. I think it has to do with the pc itself. I need to upgrade the ram anyway so I can keep this pc going for a couple more years, but if its an issue with the processor being too slow then I don't want to waste time and money upgrading the ram.
I'd rather not rush out to buy a new PC if i can solve this simply.
Is it worth increasing the ram to 256mb?

Who is your ISP and have you also tried to clear any spyware out using adaware or similar. It may just be that along with your new moden software, you got a whole lot of other crap, which is now using the PC resources. If you are with AOL for instance, then good luck.

To soundmate: On any operating system, even Windows 98 I would recommend 256MB RAM or more. It can't be your modem if the PC Clock is losing time. However, I managed to run Broadband (AOL as well!!!) on a P3 450 with 128MB RAM and that didn't cause a problem.
I am not saying don't get more memory, Do, but i can'tbe certain that's the problem. By far the most likely culprit will be spyware/adware. IGNORE whatever tools AOL tellyou to get unless they are along the lines of Ad-Aware or similar.
I wouldn't go for Sypybot, as that has only ever made my problems worse! I think it may contain adware to be honest...

sammorris before you laugh too loudly, maybe ask why you quote the same software as me afterwards(adaware). Maybe also look at all the crap that is loaded onto a PC when AOL disk is run. I've seen too many PC's running too much crap that came with the install CD, none of it is needed, and it slows down PC's. That might not be problem on a good PC, but when running something as slow as what is described here, then it all counts. If you like sticking needless crap on your PC then carry on blindly. I know which I find funnier!

another thing that can be and also it did happen to me was ..when you have a program to download music open. it will slow the computer you have to exit from that program.
