Given what I have below what is the best solution to doing 1:1 backups of DVD-9 (8.5GB) movies?

Software:
Nero 6.6.0.14
AnyDVD 5.4.1.1
DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15

Hardware & Media:
Sony Dual Layer DRX 800UL

Verbatim DVD+R Double Layer 8.5GB 2.4X - 6X
Or
Memorex DVD+R Double Layer 8.5GB 2.4X

i always shrink my movies into a 4.7 GB disc with DVD Shrink. but to make a one to one copy you will have to go with one that gets past the copyright protection. DVD Shrink does that but i don't know if you can do a one to one copy. never tried it.

nero, you have to rip the all the files to the harddrive first b/c it won't get through the copy protection. unless the disc isn't copyright protected. then Nero would be it.

also, go w/ verbatim media. very good media compared to not so good media memorex.

I usually use DVD Decrypter for my dual layer backups, it is just an iso read then iso write mode and Decrypter handles the layer break well. Being as you have AnyDVD I suppose you can just do a straight on the fly copy. You Verbatim is a better disk than Memorex.

Thank you kcwells & arniebear.

What steps would I need to follow if I wanted to do a ?straight on the fly? copy?

For on the fly you can use Nero Express and then use Image, Project and copy an entire disk. But I am really not recommending this it is much better to rip to your hard drive first and then burn. As I stated using free DVD Decrypter in iso read and then write mode is the best way to go, less chance of errors and your disk will turn out well. Nero 7 is due out in a month and hopefully will handle dual layer backups better than the current ver.

DVDshrink will do a 1:1 copy with no compression and burn it as well, so that's a one-program option as well.
