What am I doing wrong? Sima CT-1 vs. Sima CT-2

I just got the CT-1 so I can duplicate some VHS tapes for fair use backup but I'm getting "Copy Protection" errors all over the place, including on a VHS I grabbed from TV. I'm lost here.

I got it new but with no instructions. The physical hook up is simple but I don't know what to do with the "tuning" (or whatever it is) button.

I could get the CT-2 but since I would have to get it shipped to Central Mexico, the cost would really take a heafty bite out of my Social Security check.

Any thoughts will be appreciated.
