Make a PSP USB charger?

Hey guys, I've seen 2 different sites showing ways of making your own USB charger for the PSP. There's this one: http://www.angelfire.com/games5/dsresistance/pspusb/pspusb.html and this one: http://www.makezine.com/blog/archive/2005/07/make_audio_how.html . The first one tells u to use a MadCatz Car Adapter and a normal USB cable. The 2nd one asks you to use a 5V charger and a USB Mini cable. Now my question is, does it matter which combination of thses I use? I have lots of old USB cables lying around that I don't use, and a car adapter for my Nokia phone that has an output of 5.9V. I'm wondering if this is ok to use with my normal USB cable? Would 5.9V be too high? Or would there be any power incompatibilities in between the 2? I have the parts to do this, but I don't want to overload the PSP and ruin a $345 machine! Any help would be appreciated!

Why not doing it totally risk free way, buy an usb charger from ebay. They're like few bucks anyway.

Because on EBay from what I've seen, auction usually ends at $5-10 USD, and I'm in Canada. That, plus the fact that it's usually like another $10-$15 USD just for shipping, makes it not worth it, especially when I have plenty of spare cables around the house that I don't use anyways.
